December is shaping up to be an early summer scorcher up here at the top of the world, so having read the raves about A.J. Fikry, I hope it "wins". Though a return to my far away adolescence via that demned elusive Pimpernel would be great fun too. Either way, plenty of excuses to hide from our "fry you in 15 minutes" summer sun.

May I politely note the The Chronicles Of Clovis is Public domain in the US and the Life+70 countries. "Saki" was killed in 1916 in the trenches of World War I.

Thanks for the clarification. I'll update a line to its listing as well as Wild Strawberries to be consistent with the listing for The Scarlet Pimpernel.

A good selection, if a bit shorter than usual. I prefer to limit my voting to no more than half of the offerings, but I find myself forced to vote for 2/3rds this month. A good sign, and I look forward to reading any of them in the list. Though I do rather wish that Pink Carnation had made it through, because I already know I'll be reading that.

I'm glad more of these are shorter. I am not making much progress on this month's 500+ page selection and December is never a great month for long books.

Our temperatures aren't super hot - summers in the high 20s to mid 30s Celsius. The problem is our UV. It's vicious, and part of the reason why, along with our convict cousins on the penal side of the Tasman (), we have world-leading melanoma rates. Making our savage summers the perfect time to hide in the shade with a good book or ten.

Yeah, I am sure I *thought* it was a great idea to embark on Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum the same month I started a new and very hectic job...

ROFLU! Did you really?! That's as bad as my starting a new David Weber at 900+ pages the month I started a new job. A very much more intense and time consuming job. Why DO we do this to ourselves?? I know, there isn't a good answer to that.

I haven't voted in the poll yet, so I can see the names of those who have. I just noticed that there are discrepancies in the first two totals:
Clovis has five names listed, but the total shows four votes. Pimpernel has six names listed but the total shows five votes. Quote:

ETA: You can see the names after you've voted in a poll as well, by clicking on one of the vote totals for any of the options. Last edited by issybird; 11-09-2018 at 10:49 AM. |

Senility is a terrible thing - I was absolutely CERTAIN that I'd voted for Orczy in addition to Zevin, but the poll vote list says otherwise. My "ment" is compost! On the up side, looking for a commercially published edition (a bit leery of some Gutenbergs) I discovered that she also wrote a female detective, one of the first. I had never known that before today, so my apparent vote failure turned out for the good
