I went all the way to London to get my Aura, paid with my card and that was it, nobody asked me who I was or why I wanted it or where I lived.
This is also happening in France sometimes. I think there had been too many payments that bounced off, so some sellers are taking measures to protect themselves.

As I said, I think they are forced by law:

Why does my broker want a photocopy of my credit card? (Google translated).

Can I remember you that 'mafia' is an italian word?

I don't really know what is the problem, if have only to remove with a image editor the security codes on the back. My country has 1 billion of other real defects.

You know, there's a lot of things the mafia cannot legally do, should not legally do, but buying books or readers with a credit card, well I'm not a specialist in Italian laws but I'm pretty sure no law is broken by an anonymous purchase (not even totally anonymous since anyone can be found through a credit card transaction)
Now if they ask you extra identification when you buy dangerous chemicals or transfer very important amounts of money or something like that I would understand but this here makes little sense.

I'd suspect that they are trying to cut down on the number of purchases made with stolen credit card information or cloned credit cards.

One of my co-workers is having fun with one of her credit cards now. At some point when she made a purchase, her credit card information was stolen. Next thing she knew, she was contacted by the credit card company to let her know that several purchases outside her normal type of purchases had been made. Something about purchasing two HD TVs on the same day from different retailers triggered an flag.

Regards,
David

@Quexos: For what I know any transaction is subjected to new anti-money laundering laws. Are those laws really useful? Well, I don't really know. I'm quite sceptic about the good will of our rulers.

@DNSB: No, I think it's for the money traceability, but what you said could be a good side effect

Funny enough the cheapest way to buy an Aura from Sweden (at this moment) would probably be to take a cheap flight to UK, buy one from WHSmith and fly home. :-)

I bought one when I was in London last weekend. It's very, very nice! Huge difference in reading experience compared to my old e-reader.

This is exactly what I did, I went to London to get my Aura three weeks ago. I did not fly there, I took the High Speed Train aka Eurostar from continental Europe
Pray tell, what WH Smith did you get yours from ? I went to the one located at Oxford street, downtown. It was inside a gallery, almost next to a Waterstone. You can see the Waterstone store when you walk on Oxford Street but not the WH Smith one. It's the guys at Waterstone that informed me of the other store located inside the gallery.
But unfortunately for me, they were out of Aura's but the guy there very kindly directed me to another WH Smith in north London where they still had the unit in stock so I got mine there.

I walked all the way past Oxford Street to Holburn Circus. There is a large WHSmith-store. When I asked for an Aura he looked like they were all gone, but he found one for me.

Afterwards I noticed the store you mentioned besides Waterstone, as well as one on Baker St. Don't know if they had any in store, but it would have saved me a lot of walking... :-)

If you leave by Stanstedt, there is a WHSmith at the airport. They sold PW for £99 at another store there...

I pre-ordered mine from Mondadori in the end of April, it was expected to be shipped May 17th and be delivered the 20th... But the 10th it already was on my desk. Very nice surprise
