I'm tempted to get one of these mainly for pdfs and comix (long bus trips).

Just a quick question to make it totally clear, is it possible to zoom in on a section using the menu, and then drag the page around (like you would do with a mouse) to see other areas? (especially for double page ones)

Love to see those screenshots too, but I'm very tempted.

Apologies all, my previous post was overly long-winded, so here's the problem more concisely:

I've tried 3 different SD cards (1x1gb micro sd and 2x2gb standard sd - all three official products) and the Q7 won't fully recognize any of them, giving me the message "Init SD fail" each time that I use GPI.

The 2gb sd cards, though, did appear on the Q7 screen as"disk", and I could open the (empty) folder fine...

I'm most interested in getting comics to run, so I've tried installing Python, as Cold Sun says, but even when I try to do this with the file on the Q7 itself (not the SD card), GPI just gives me the "Init SD fail" message again, even though there's no SD card in the slot.

Any help much appreciated!

Cheers ColdSun

Thanks for this guide ColdSun. I use Comix on my pcs so was glad to be able to get it running on my Q7. Cheekily may I suggest that when following the guide you get the Comix package from the Debian Repos here as Comix 4 and above has the feature of keeping transformations saved from session to session. This has the advantage that you don't need to rotate the reader every time you start reading.

@Roguefan99 the reader has plenty of different modes and you can easily set it to a different zoom level and move around with the touch screen like so:

@Del1357 - I had that "init sd fail" message but then I reformatted the sd card and tried again and it worked. Good luck with that.

WiFi problem with my SmartQ7.

I used my SmartQ7 for the whole day.
After I restarted the device, wicd stopped recognizing any wireless networks.
I read somewhere, that the it can happen when the device is too hot, so I turned it off for the whole week. It didn't help.
Then I tried to reflash it (4.0). It didn't help too. I also tried all of the older firmwares (3,2,1).
when i run "sudo ifconfig -a", I get only the "lo" interface. So it looks like the device is not recognized.
I checked and the driver is loaded (i ran lsmod, and found there sd8686).
Does anybody know, what can i do?
Any help will be appreciated.

Yeah was nice , got home from holiday, and the Q7 was waiting there, installed as directed above but with comic version 4, and all went flawlessly.

Thx for the review and directions and also for the pics of it in actual use.

Hi All,

Just received my Smartq 7 and installed Firmware 5 on it.
Now I am trying to load the comic reader on it with the 2 files from page 1.

While installing python-imaging I am getting the following error:
Wrong architecture 'arm'

i search the whole internet (or at least it feels like it) but can not get any further.
Does anybody can help me?

Thanks from the Netherlands

UPDATE: OK, I suddenly remembered what could cause this...... it is ARMEL!!
Is anyone willing to help me with Python-imaging and Comix which should work on ARMEL??

Firstly, welcome Mothergoose!

Have you tried to "sudo apt-get install (insert python-imaging package name here)" from the command line? That will install the proper version for V5 of the firmware. Pretty sure the repositories are good in V5 to at least get this installed. There are threads about additions that can be made to the repositories, and how, that you can get to later. First we need to get you reading!

Then I would follow the link in JamesFlames posting, above this one, to pull down the correct version of Comix 4. At the site for Debian that he points you to you can search for different packages and grab the one that is proper for your hardware/software. You could probably search for the python-imaging package there too and pull them both from the same site!

Once you have the correct versions pulled down you should be able to click and get the installer running.

One last thing, you have read about increasing the size of your "loop" file before installing a bunch of apps right? If not hop over to smartqmid.com and do a little searching. Another fantastic resource for these devices.

Hopefully I did not throw too much junk out at once! If so, just yell. There are quite a few of us that live at both sites who are more than willing to lend a hand.

Enjoy!

I had similar problem till I realised you need the new versions for Karmic Koala. I used the ones from the Ubuntu install for Karmic to install comix on my Q7 with V5. Also get the Python for Karmic. It works great, with a simple install.

Yeah this worked flawlessly, until i upgraded the firmware to v 5.0

It didn't see the apps after upgrading. Tried to remove python, and comix but that was not an option via sudo. so formated card, put the firmware 5 only on card, then tried after with python came up with this error.
" ERROR: WRONG ARCHITECTURE 'ARM' "

Then with comix 3.6 I had this error

" ERROR: DEPENDENECY IS NOT SATISFIABLE" PYTHON-IMAGE (>=1.1.4 "

Same error as above with comix 4.0.4.1

About ready to give up on linux and switch to another op system

1. Open evilvte and type this command exactly how you see it:

sudo touch ~/.Xauthority && sudo chown $LOGNAME ~/.Xauthority && chmod 775 ~/. Xauthority

Also, if someone found an easier way to fix it - please post it here. Thanks!
Guys, I'm on the verge of destroying my Q7 so please help me...

I've just downgraded to firmware 3.0 to install comix again. I get the "failed to run" message above, then did what ColdSun said to do in evilvte.

However, I then get the message "cannot access 'Xauthority': no such file or directory"

Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?

Any advice appreciated!

Make sure you put the "." (period) in front of all the "Xauthority" . If possible copy the whole command from coldsun's post and paste it into a text document. Copy the file to your SD card, open the document with leafpad and then copy the text, then paste it into evilvte terminal.
