Quote:
The search for her estranged father in Mexico leads a young woman into danger and intrigue in this classic mystery from a New York Times bestseller.

An unexpected “gift” has arrived for Carol Farley this Christmas: an envelope with no return address containing a newspaper clipping. Blurred but unmistakable is a photo of a man missing for years and feared dead—Carol’s father. It is a summons calling her to a world she has never known, to a place of ancient majesty and blood-chilling terror. Surrounded by towering pyramids on Mexico City’s Walk of the Dead, a frightened yet resolute young woman searches for a perilous truth and for the beloved parent she thought was gone forever. But there are dark secrets lurking in the shadows of antiquity, a conspiracy she never imagined . . . and enemies who are determined that Carol Farley will not leave Mexico alive.

The Hellfire Conspiracy is the fourth in the Barker and Llewelyn series by Will Thomas. It's on sale for $2.99 at Kindle US right now.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000RRDBAW

Spoiler:
Quote:
The hunt for a serial killer leads a private detective to Victorian London’s most powerful secret society in this “marvelously wrought” historical mystery (Kirkus Reviews).

When a twelve-year-old girl from the upper classes goes missing in the East End, enquiry agent Cyrus Barker assume her kidnapping is the work of white slavers. But when they discover five girls have been murdered in Bethnal Green, taunting letters begin to arrive in Craig’s Court from a killer calling himself Mr. Miacca.

Barker fears that Miacca might be part of the Hellfire Club, a group of powerful, hedonistic aristocrats performing Satanic rituals. He must track the fiend to his hideout, while his ex-con assistant Thomas Llewelyn confronts the man who put him in prison.

The Hellfire Conspiracy is another wild ride that “brings to life a London roiling with secret leagues, deadly organizations, and hidden clubs” (Ron Bernas, Detroit Free Press).

And There He Kept Her by Joshua Moehling is $2 at Amazon, B&N and Kobo US.

I just started the book today and decided to look it up on Amazon and boom! It's on sale. I am really enjoying the book so far. The opening is tense and exciting, but the book also does a good job showing random things a small town sheriff has to deal with.

Quote:
They thought he was a helpless old man. They were wrong.

When two teenagers break into a house on a remote lake in search of prescription drugs, what starts as a simple burglary turns into a nightmare for all involved. Emmett Burr has secrets he's been keeping in his basement for more than two decades, and he'll do anything to keep his past from being revealed. As he gets the upper hand on his tormentors, the lines blur between victim, abuser, and protector.

Personal tragedy has sent former police officer Ben Packard back to the small Minnesota town of Sandy Lake in search of a fresh start. Now a sheriff's deputy, Packard is leading the investigation into the missing teens, motivated by a family connection. As clues dry up and time runs out to save them, Packard is forced to reveal his own secrets and dig deep to uncover the dark past of the place he now calls home.

Unrelentingly suspenseful and written with a piercing gaze into the dark depths of the human soul, And There He Kept Her is a thrilling page-turner that introduces readers to a complicated new hero and forces us to consider the true nature of evil.

The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks is $3 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Has horror elements, which is about as much as I know about this
Quote:
The Wasp Factory is a bizarre, imaginative, disturbing, and darkly comic look into the mind of a child psychopath - one of the most infamous of contemporary Scottish novels.

'Two years after I killed Blyth I murdered my young brother Paul, for quite different reasons than I'd disposed of Blyth, and then a year after that I did for my young cousin Esmerelda, more or less on a whim. That's my score to date. Three. I haven't killed anybody for years, and don't intend to ever again. It was just a stage I was going through.'

Enter - if you can bear it - the extraordinary private world of Frank, just sixteen, and unconventional, to say the least.

Joffe's free Friday (sometimes weekend) mystery is What Lies Beneath, which is the first in Bill Kitson's Mike Nash series. And Joffe are up to their re-naming tricks again - this was first published as Depth of Despair. There are also a romance (see the Romance thread) and a historical novel (see Fiction - everything else) free at the moment.

Quote:
BONES IN THE WATER.

Two skeletons are discovered in Lamentation Tarn, a mountain lake.

Talented detective Mike Nash and his team have little evidence with which to work, until a surprising discovery prompts them to contact law enforcement agencies in Eastern Europe.

A joint task force is formed to uncover a criminal network involved in prostitution, drugs, and human trafficking, but Nash's preoccupation with internal politics, as well as with an attractive Russian detective, proves to be a distraction.

Finally, a young victim escapes the gang's clutches, providing Nash with much needed evidence. A search of the neighboring tarn yields evidence of even more heinous crimes.

Who else will die before the criminals are brought to bitter justice?

This is a lot less than they have been in many years, but still a bit much for me. (Luckily, I have almost all from earlier times...) Me, too; alas. It adds up to way too big an outlay, especially on a longish series. They're too old to justify the price for me, but if people are willing to pay it, more power to Severn House et al.

Good intel, though, and with luck the price might drop over time. Thanks!
