The Railway Detective is the first in Edward Marston's Railway Detective series, most of whose titles have gone on sale at various prices in various places before. Now, however, the first title is FREE at Kindle US and UK, and at Kobo US. (Probably at Kobo UK too, but I don't tend to check there...)

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006WB7MMU
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-railway-detective
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B006WB7MMU

Spoiler:
Quote:
The thrilling first case for the Railway Detective

London 1851. With the opening of the Great Exhibition at hand, interest is mounting in the engineering triumphs of the railways, but not everyone feels like celebrating…

In an audacious attack, the London to Birmingham mail train is robbed and derailed, causing many casualties. Planned with military precision, this crime proves a challenge to Detective Inspector Robert Colbeck who fights to untangle a web of murder, blackmail and destruction. As Colbeck closes in on the criminal masterminds, events take an unexpected turn when the beautiful Madeleine, daughter of the injured train driver, becomes a pawn in the criminals’ game. With time running out, good and evil, new and old, battle against each other. But will the long arm of the law have speed on its side?

Full of historical detail, The Railway Detective is an action-packed dip into murky 1850s London.

'A grand romp very much in the tradition of Holmes and Watson...packed with characters Dickens would have been proud of. Wonderful, well written.' Time Out

Dogstar Rising is the second in Parker Bilal's Makana series. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US (coupon/VIPable).

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009SJZW7A
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/dogstar-rising

Quote:
Summer, 2001. The mutilated bodies of young boys are turning up in the backstreets of Cairo, and the finger of suspicion is pointing at the city's Coptic community. As Makana, a private investigator who fled his native Sudan a decade ago, watches the embers of religious hatred begin to glow, he has a premonition that history may be about to repeat itself. But for now, Makana has another case to solve, involving a disgruntled travel agent, stolen money, and threatening letters-an assignment that appears to point to nothing more than a family feud. That is, until Makana meets Meera, a woman with a dangerous secret who asks for his help- and stumbles upon an unlikely link to the murdered boys.

When the travel agent's office becomes the backdrop to a brutal killing Makana is the sole witness, and he attracts the unwanted attention of not only the state security services and the police but also a disreputable Sudanese businessman-who claims to hold the key to Makana's past.

His search for answers takes him from the labyrinth of Cairo to the city of Luxor and an abandoned monastery near the tombs of the pharaohs, where he uncovers a web of intrigue, violence, and secrecy that reaches deep into Egypt's political heart...

I love mysteries set in Egypt, probably second only to mysteries set in France, and I've quite liked the three or four titles I've read in this series.

Quote:
Shell Scott. He’s a guy with a pistol in his pocket and murder on his mind. The crime world’s public enemy number one, this Casanova is a sucker for a damsel in distress. When a pair of lovely legs saunters into his office, he can’t help but take the job, even when the case is a killer. There are way too many dames knocking at Shell’s door, all saying they are the same woman. Not that Shell minds a private Las Vegas harem, but they are really complicating this case. He has his hands full peeling each woman’s mask, but Shell can handle it. It’s a dirty job, but somebody’s got to do it. He’s going to find this broad or die trying.

Honored with the Life Achievement Award by the Private Eye Writers of America!

Find This Woman is the 4th book in the Shell Scott Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Pretty much all of the titles in the Jennifer Marsh series by Judy Fitzwater are on sale at Kindle US and UK, either individually, or as part of a couple of omnibuses. FYI, for a moderator who may not be familiar with mystery series, most of this series was originally published in various traditional formats. Steve Hockensmith is the author of the Holmes on the Range series, which I've found to be quite entertaining. Now he has a book of 12 short stories available for free at Kindle US and UK.

Blarney: 12 Tales of Lies, Crime & Mystery

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0081887V2
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0081887V2

Spoiler:
Quote:
It’s the ninth commandment: Thou shalt not lie. But if you’ve already covered the big sins on the list -- coveting, stealing, killing -- why balk at a fib...especially when it might save your neck?

That’s why you’ll find all kinds of lies in Steve Hockensmith’s crime stories. Trying to cut through them to the truth are cops, private eyes, spies, criminals and ordinary people in way over their heads.

In the Derringer Award-winning “Erie’s Last Day,” a retiring detective races against the clock to solve one final case before he has to turn in his badge.

“Fred Menace, Commie for Hire” introduces the wildest P.I. ever to wisecrack his way through a case.

In “Strays,” a paranoid old man’s fantasies about a neighborhood crime ring turn out to be true...sort of.

“The Case of the Unfortunate Fortune Cookie” offers a hilarious answer to one of life’s little mysteries: Why don’t fortune cookies have real fortunes in them anymore?

Retired cop Larry Erie takes on his first case as a private detective -- the theft of an irreplaceable piece of baseball history -- in “Minor League.”

In “Burl Lockhart’s in Town,” a pair of rustlers try to get the jump on the Pinkerton on their trail only to discover that he’s even closer than they thought.

The search for a stolen dog leads Larry Erie to a deadly conspiracy in “Animals.”

An innocent young man finds himself caught in the crossfire of a Chicago drug war in “Didn’t Do Nothing.”

In the Shamus Award finalist “Tricks,” a reluctant Larry Erie finds himself dragged into the search for a kidnapped monkey.

“The MacGuffin Theft Case” tackles another of life’s little mysteries -- why are pizzas round? -- and finds that the answer is “Communist spies.” Really.

In the Shamus-, Barry- and Anthony-nominated “The Big Road,” Larry Erie teams up with a trucker to find a highjacked shipment of TVs.

And “Blarney” takes a peek into the twisted mind of the world’s most embittered crime writer.

Originally published in Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine and various anthologies, these 12 tales from short story master Steve Hockensmith (Holmes on the Range, Dreadfully Ever After) are sure to please any lover of quality crime fiction -- and that’s no blarney!
