In March, NPR highlighted Barnes & Noble’s remarkable turnaround as the company now plans to open 30 new stores this year. In several cases, B & N is returning to areas it had previously abandoned, and even taking over a few former Amazon bookshop locations.

Turns out B & N’s biggest strategy change came from taking a page used by independent bookshops. Now, the company is empowering their local Barnes & Noble shops to order books based on the preferences of their local readers.

It's good news. I think this is what CEO did for his bookstores in Britain. Appears to be a good strategy.

But then, it's not like it was full of books before. So assuming that, the amount of floor space dedicated to books remains the same. And it's possible that the toys were spread around the store before and are now consolidated in that section, which makes more room for books elsewhere.

In my B&N, they pulled the audio/video and filled it with books. They moved the mysteries down there and shuffled books around upstairs making room for ever-expanding manga section.

In the store I'm talking about, no. It is not possible. I saw what I saw.

That store doesn't have an upstairs. They didn't even bother to take down the signs marking the video and audio sections before they filled it with toys. The science book shelf is less than half the size it was, and crammed into a back corner. The NOOKs they had on display had dead batteries.

I would hope any franchise store would exert a minimum of quality control. If B&N has any such thing, it never reaches that shop. I have no reason to go there ever again.

There was an article Sunday in the Wall St Journal about the direction the new CEO is taking the company. The author of the article toured the newly remodeled Upper West Side of Manhattan store with James Daunt. Daunt provided a lot of background on the changes he is making. The big takeaway was allowing store managers to tailor store content and layout to their specific customer base.
