State of the 1000

I have been out of mobileread/irex forums for a while. And have not been using my Iliad for months now too! Without beeing loaded with optimismn I'm back to paper :-( I just got asked from a collegue (beeing the local ereader expert, with the only one who ever bought one) what ereader model I would suggest.

Now when I left the 1000 was just out of the box, and in a terrific bad release shape. Like low battery life and the such.

Has these issues been adressed yet? Can I advice this device?

At least at the time back then, with seriously low battery life, I would lose my face if I'd advice to buy this device...

well, it depends on what you want out of it. first, the battery life has been addressed in the most recent firmware version (1.02), so its just fine for a transcontinental trip. it can also charge via my motorola razor usb wall charger, so you don't have to boot up to re-charge.

I bought the DR1000S to read scientific (biological) papers, thinking that it would beat lugging around several filing cabinets worth of material. this is, of course, easily accomplished, and the resolution is fantastic. there is one BUT though- the processor in the thing is just not up to rendering shaded/detailed images sometimes. a full page (8.5 x11) image on a pdf will sometimes take 30s or longer to load, which has been very annoying. for papers that are not heavy on graphics, the DR1000S is just great, and I still use almost everyday.

all in all, if irex has any plans to release an intel Atom version of the DR1000S, I would probably hold out for that one if you haven't already taken the plunge.
