Since I have recently read 1984 I am voting for Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom by Cory Doctorow because I like the sound of it...

I think the six people who voted for Lovecraft would disagree with you.

Three people nominated it so that's good 'nuff for me. This is just for fun club... the only rule is...

Don't you mean, don't talk about book club?

Sorry, that was just asking for a Fight Club Reference.

But if we are going to have categories, why not stick with them? We agreed to change the August category to instead of being a book about recent times to a book written in recent times. And Lovecraft does not fit at all.

Yes, it was a take on the Fight Club rule. But, we don't want Book Club to be a secret... so I took literary license.

Maybe then we need to go back and look at what we decided vs. what we have and redo what needs redoing.

I don't think we need to do that. If one of those books win, se la vi.

From now on, we should bring these things up in the nomination thread.

That said, the three books getting the most votes all have post WWII publish dates.

And I voted for Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom.
The Bellamy piece was written in the 19th century and 1984 was in written in the 40s. It does have the aspect of dystopia about it. Its just from the vantage point of another species which has discovered the remains of a previous one.

Voted for Looking Backward, though. I've been curious about that since reading about it in A People's History of the United States.

1984 was discussed to death in English class. Been there, done that and don't want to do it again. Let's do something different then what most of us have already done in school.

You're so lucky you got to discuss such interesting literature in English class. I didn't
