Links should open new tabs/windows

Maybe I missed a user profile setting somewhere, but when I click on a link in a post, it opens the link in the tab/browser I'm reading the post in which means to continue reading the post, I have to read the link and then hit the back button.
Although, I can right-click and open the link in a new tab, it would be nice if the default behavior of the forums was to open links in new tabs.

(Or point me to where I can set this up in my profile.)

Thanks,

Mitch

This is a browser setting. Don't think the forum would support since people use different browsers. Go to your Tools menu (upper right hand corner). Select Internet Options, in the first tab (General) near the bottom is a setting for Tabs. Clicking the "settings" button and choose what you want. Didn't work for me. Maybe you have to restart your computer. I just right click on the link and open in a new tab so I don't loose my place in the forum I am viewing.

With Opera, I just middle-click a link when I want to open it in a new page (a.k.a. tab). Shift-middle-click if I want to open it in the background (i.e. open in a new page, but keep the focus in the one I'm reading).

I understand that it can be done with a right click or a middle click, but imo forums should open links in other tabs automatically.
All the other forums I read work this way and it makes sense to work this way since presumably I'm still reading the forum and don't want to navigate away from it, but I want to investigate the given link at some point.

I'm with you Mitch G and this has been asked for before but the powers that be don't seem to want to do it.

I agree that links should open a new tab or window (depending on the browser and settings).

I use Google's Chrome browser and when I right click on a link I can open in a new tab, a new window or a new incognito window that doesn't put the link in the browser's history(handy when you're shopping for a gift for your spouse that uses the same computer!).

Alright, we have a new feature: Optionally open links in new browser windows / tabs

In your User Control Panel go to Edit Options. There, under "Thread Display Options", you find "New Window Links" which allows you to choose whether hyperlinks should remain in your current browser window or open in a new window / tab.

Very good solution.

A website should NEVER try to force its own settings/preferences on a user. Where or how links open are MY decision.

I know forums that open links in new windows by default (without option to disable!) and I could kick the responsible person every time again. If I want to leave a page and follow a link, I want to follow that link - not get a new window/tab.

I don't mind having the option to do so, but I hate websites trying to dictate how I view them. That's like books telling you where you may read them (i.e. in the living room, but not in bed, and don't even think about reading the book in public!...)
