Calibre Metadata.DB on two machines

I have two machines sharing a library, or rather, supposed to be sharing a library. I have 2 of the metadata.db files in the root of thelibrary, one called out as specific to one machines name.

Is there any way to combine these and only use one db so the files are the same?

It's possible, but it requires a few scripting skill.
Basically, you have to append tp one DB the result of a selecty on the other, renumbering the items (BOOKS, AUTHORS, TAGS, PUBLISHERS, etc...) so that primary and foreign keys are not violated.
It's doable applying an offset to each ID.

Well, without combining these, can the two computers not SHARE the metadata file?

You have to put the library on a network drive, try dropbox for example.

That's what I did, and the second machine created what the system calls "metadata (machine name's conflicted copy 2009-07-08).db"

Perhaps the original machine still had Calibre running, would that lock out system #2?

You can only run one copy of calibre on a given database at a time.

OK, then as usual, its PEBKAC. Is there a setting to have Calibre actually close down rather than minimize to the tray?
