Kindle paperwhite - How to know if a device is stolen or not?

Buying a kindle paperwhite from a person who got that as a gift (as he said). he does not have the receipt for that purchase as it was a gift. Box still has that Amazon seal (certified frustration-free packaging) label intact.
Want to know - will there be still a risk of this device might be stolen and blacklisted by someone; and that would not allow me to register amazon account in the device?

Ask the seller for the serial number then call Amazon to see if it's blacklisted

Or, if you have a Kindle account, ask the seller to charge the Kindle before you get there and see if you're allowed to register your account on it. That's what I've done at pawn shops before.

But that would require he break the package seal, which means he couldn't sell it as "still sealed" to the next guy, if OP backs out of the deal. Seller is unlikely to be willing to do this.

If you are buying through Ebay or Amazon, there is zero risk. You will get your money refunded. Otherwise, there is a small risk but if it bothers you, don't buy it. Just buy a new one and move on.

I have purchased a sealed kindle off someone and it was still blacklisted. I was lucky that the guy was nice enough to come back and give me my money back. Be careful!

Okay, I missed that. I would probably just take the chance — but, if it's one of the original Paperwhites (and still in its sealed box) I might be worried that it was sitting too long without being charged.

If it's still in the box, the serial number should be on a sticker on the side of the box. A call to Amazon and they'll check if it's blacklisted. Just bought a used one a few weeks ago. Called Amazon, they said it wasn't blacklisted, but the seller hadn't removed it from their account, and helped me make sure I knew how to do that for them.

i was warned in another thread, that it is easy for an unscrupulous seller to fake/re-seal those "security" seals,

but as others have already said paypal protection should cover you on ebay and amazon A-Z warranty on their marketplace

Check the serial number with Amazon. It's perfectly possible for a Kindle still sealed in its packaging to be blacklisted. (Say if it was stolen during delivery, and so was reported as not delivered.)
