New York Public Library help
So, we have a new member with a 505 who might be able to get hold of a NYPL card.
They are wondering how the check out process works. Can someone guide her thru it? Here is her question: How does the NY library work? I have someone in New York that I can access their library card and it looks like you check them out and back in. But I wonder how? Also if the library card is in a different name, will that affect the reader that it goes on? Final question, what format do you get for the Sony 505? Adobe? Thanks Natalie[/QUOTE] |

I think I answered this in another thread, not sure though...
I'm not a resident of NY but was able to get a non-resident NYPL library card by downloading and printing out their application form, filling it out and mailing it to them with a check for $100 and a copy of my driver's license. My card is good for a year. They sent me a card in the mail. I can then access their web site for downloadable books to get Adobe PDF books. (Unfortunately they don't have ePub available yet--hopefully will someday!) The books will expire 21 days after downloading. Hope this helps! dordale |

My local library system, Boston Public Library, has added ePub and when they did, I noticed that I now get a choice of how long I want the book for. I can choose 7 days, 14 days, or 21 days.
If you have PDF or ePub and "return" it, it will be deleted from your computer. But if you also have the book on your 505, you will find that it is still readable if there is still time left. If you are honest, you can take out Mobipocket eBooks, strip the DRM, convert with Calibre, read and then delete. Also, there is a limit usually of 10-14 electronic borrows at one time. I am allowed 10 at one time. Once you have a library card, you can request eBooks. But to see what to request, go to http://search.overdrive.com/default.asp and then find the form at the library and fill it out. Last edited by JSWolf; 05-30-2009 at 11:09 PM. |

I was really impressed with the Boston Public library digital collection. There's no way to get a similar deal as with the new york public library and just pay a flat yearly fee, is there?

Just a slight addition: If the book is the current one being read (the one that opens when you switch on the Reader) at the expiration time, you can continue reading it indefinitely *as long as it remains the current ebook*.
Please correct me if this is wrong, as I only encountered this behavior once. |

I do know that one time I had to reset my reader and in doing so, it reset the date back to 2007 or something. Anyway, my reader was telling me that my books would expire in 532 days or something like that. Don't know if manually resetting your date to an earlier date would work or not though. dordale |

I applied for a non-resident library card for NYPL, they cashed my check so I'm expecting the card to arrive soon. I live in Costa Rica but used a U.S. check and my forwarding address (which is in Florida) and sent a copy of my passport.
Question: After you've downloaded a book to your reader (I have Sony 505), do you actually have to read the book within the loan period or is it on your reader and you can read it any time? |

Being able to continue reading the library book after the expiration date hasn't worked for me with the NYPL. The book is gone!

suppose I was going on a trip and wanted to download books from the library.... In that case, since I wouldn't be going online during my trip, I could reset the date and not have to worry about my books expiring. |

The date trick definitely has some uses. Also, I've found that if you only connect your reader to Calibre, the date will not automatically change. So just put as many library books on as you want, change the date on your reader, and avoid the Sony Library and ADE and you can read the library books for as long as you want.
