Epson and E Ink Announce a New Addition to the EPD Controller Family
– TOKYO, Japan, October 9, 2009 –

Seiko Epson Corporation ("Epson", TSE: 6724), a global supplier of imaging products and semiconductor solutions, and E Ink Corporation, the leading developer and marketer of electronic paper display (EPD) technology, today announced a new jointly developed display controller IC, the S1D13522, which provides a high performance, space saving solution for E Ink's Vizplex-enabled electronic paper displays. The new IC is based on the same powerful engine as the first model, the S1D13521, but provides customers with a higher level of performance and additional features.........

Nice, they added embedded RAM.

I guess it won't make it into PRS-900, but I expect the next year's Sonys will use it.

Maximum display size is 768x1024 @ 50Hz, vs 2048 x 1536 @ 50 Hz on the S1D13521. I'm not sure what the Hz rate means for EInk, but the S1D13522 limitation is probably due to its 2MB of built in memory.

The smaller display size still covers 5" to 8" displays, but not the 825 × 1200 9.7" screens and 1024x1280 10+" screens. These can obviously still use the S1D13521.
