page_styles1.css after conversion

Hi!

I recently noticed that all my epubs converted using calibre 3.0 (64bit version) have a secondary page_style.css sheet named "page_styles1.css".

In the editor it shows:
Styles:
page_styles.css
page_styles1.css
stylesheet.css

Sometimes the second .css file is an exact duplicate, sometimes it shows different font faces.

Even with unconverted epubs that show one .css file, I wind up with 3.

I wasn't getting this on my previous computer with an older version of Calibre, when I migrated to the new laptop I imported all of my settings from the previous version.

Is this a new feature? Have I turned something off or on that should be on or off?

Thanks for any information.

Not happening here.

Do you have a (additional) 'User stylesheet" (AKA 'Extra CSS)?

Is it possible that the original CSS was not declared properly, thus Calibre trying to add a CSS found the name in use and broke the tie?

Just checked Calibre, under "preferences>Common Options>Styling" I have fonts and colours checked off. But I've always had those checked off.

I have three rules under "preferences>Common Options>Transform styles" which may be a new thing I added after moving computers.

Now we know the differences in our settings.
CSS work by the "last defined" style.

Kovid or one of the other major developers can confirm that the second one overrides the first (and still leaving it intact)

Hmm... It seems to be something that's triggered by the original file. If I make my own from Word, I don't get it. If I reconvert from a retail epub, it sometimes happens, sometimes not.

I just tried it with various original epubs I have on my computer, sometimes it shows up, sometimes not, there is no consistent trigger.

Apologies for all the replies.

It appears to be something triggered by embedded fonts. If the original file doesn't have embedded fonts, it just gives me the two usual .css files. If there *are* embedded fonts, it spawns the two page_styles.css files. I have "remove embedded fonts" turned on in my preferences, no fonts show up in the stylesheet.css file.

It never happened on the previous version I had, it's the newer 3.0 64bit version.

It's not life altering, it's just annoying.

Under "Preferences>Common Options>Look & Feel>Transform Styles" I have (now) 4 rules:
1) If line-height equals any value, remove it
2) If text-align equals justify, remove it
3) If Font-family equals any value, remove it
4) if font-size is less than 1, change it to 1em (my eyes are bad)

I hope this will kill the problem.

UPDATE: Nope, it didn't.

Are you HAVING Calibre embed the called for fonts (needed if the device does not already have those)?

Not as far as I know, based on what my settings were on my previous version.

"preferences>common options>look & feel>styling>filter style information>select what style you want completely removed", I have both fonts and colours checked. And come to think of it, it doesn't remove the colours either.

So, unless it's being overwritten somewhere else that's new (as in a recent addition to the program since my previous version (32 bit and 2.56 I think ), I can't see where it would be forcing it to add the fonts to an extra .css sheet.

Why would you turn of full justify? You can use the hyphenation plugin to hyphenate your KF8 eBooks so you don't get gaps.

The other issue is that sometimes these font sizes smaller than 1em are simulated smallcaps that are now no longer correct.

I turn off justification because I visually dislike it. I use as few plugins as possible, preferring to alter the style by hand. If I ever want to justify a book, which I can never see happening because I HATE. IT., my Kobo can turn on justification.

I change all font sizes to at least 1em because my vision is not what is used to be, and I find that at least, 1em is comfortable, even for super and subscript.

Everyone has their own preferences for reading, which is what makes ereaders so useful.

Given that you your vision needs at least a 1em font size, I suggest you get a Kobo Aura H2O Edition 2 or a Kobo Aura One for the larger screen size and the many more choices of font sizes.
