Total Boox: Read first, pay later
I don't think there's been a post about this yet?
New bookstore model: sample anything and everything you like (as long as you "read" each page for less than six seconds), then get charged for the amount of the book you actually read. http://mashable.com/2013/01/21/total-boox/ I am unclear if you can ever download the book to an ereader in this model, or only read in their app. Sourcebooks is on board, and they are trying to get Penguin (I will believe that when I see it!). Thoughts? eP |

Six seconds? Is he crazy? How much would he charge if you read the entire book?

"if you read 10 pages of a 100-page book that costs $10, you'll only pay $1"
from the article. the problem being, if this has any legs at all, the big boys will just implement it into their current stores/devices/apps and he will get buried. |

Boy, the publishers really work hard to think of anything that would increase piracy, dont' they?
(OK, I can see its use in educational settings, where you'd only pay for the part of a text book that you actually used.) Last edited by BeccaPrice; 01-22-2013 at 10:54 AM. |

This sounds like a really stupid idea to me.

I think it's a niche market, I don't think it's stupid.
People inclined to pirate will find a way and screenshot-ing individual pages is tedious compared to the alternatives. The reason I think it's niche is that I'm not convinced it works any better than samples for fiction. And samples are free, even a handful of pages here will cost - unless you speed-read. But for textbooks or reference works or possibly even short story collections, I can see some demand. |

I don't think this is a good idea. Imagine if a physical book store were to charge for flipping through a book. Why do this with ebooks. I would never sign up for something like this.

Sounds like a scheme to make money from books so bad nobody will read more than the first few pages. No thanks.

Amazon has the 'look' option for lots of ebooks, and the books where I've chosen that option I've been able to read usually the first 30 or so pages, depending on the nature of the book.
So, in a sense that option is already there, and it's free, and there's no obligation to buy. No idea whether one could copy out that info in the 'look' view - didn't even think of it. |

I think I could capture all the text on a page, right-click Copy, and then paste into a text editor in less than 6 seconds. If I was going to bother.
It doesn't sound like anything that would interest me. |

Whoever came up with this idea does not love books or reading.

This would kind of be like if you went to a bookstore and they charged you by the hour to browse.
