See Intel? The amount per day of losses would finance a small country for a year!
Yet the recently sacked boss was once an expert.

Actually even the successful ones surely can't justify any salary over $250,000 pa. No-one single person can.

Oh wait! Sears let Amazon walk away with Mail Order. AT&T held onto the old tariff model and chased customers to competitors. And the list goes on, with CEO failing to adapt the business till to late.

Not mention thinking that buying Kmart was a good idea.
Why would one failing company buying another failing company be a good idea?

Because you think you can run the failing company you bought such that it's not longer failing. Also, it has a known name so you don't have to start from scratch with a new company.

Sears was already in financial troubles. Buying another company in worse financial difficulties was a very bad idea. They would have been better off using the money to try to position themselves better in the market place.

It happens a lot and it's a good question. I guess you chalk it up to desperation.

I did a writeup about the service and the app. I like the service, the app is bad (for now), but if it's important to you to support your local indie store (it is to me) and don't mind the walled garden (I do, unfortunately), it's a pretty good start considering it is day one of a new system.

A more technically sophisticated person than me could probably find the source files, but I couldn't.

If they had any free eBooks with DRM, I'd give them a try and see what I could find out.

One moment, please - [Off topic]:

I just now realized are J. Robert Lennon who wrote the book, Mailman. I bought this in hardback when it first came out, and it is a book that I have treasured since first reading it. My copy is a First Edition, in pristine condition and is protected by a Brodart archival book jacket.

Mailman was a transformative book for me, and made me aware of my own limitations and frustrations. The novel is a satirical masterpiece that resonates with the things I find silly in life. And yet, it is filled with pathos too, in addition to having a certain Kafkaesque quality that heightens the situations the protagonist has to face - probably feelings most of us go through in life.

Thank you for creating this important novel.

!!!

I do not get that kind of compliment very much, thank you!!! Really nice of you, and it means a great deal to me.

Actually one of my immense frustrations about that book is that there is no ebook of it! Unlike my earlier publishers, who reverted the rights to me and enabled me to issue my own ebooks, WW Norton won't revert, and also won't put out an ebook. (The fact that I lurk here sometimes should tell you I really love reading electronically and think ebooks are great for writers.)

One of the reasons I'm so gung-ho about Bookshop is that indie stores have supported and sustained my career, and I don't mind giving up some things to support them back.

For me, as a reader, it's very frustrating not to have it available as an ebook. It's a shame the publisher will not revert it back to you.

My Library is currently in a climate-controlled storage in the U.S., where it (and I) patiently await my return...

It seems to work out that way. But who knows, maybe they are desperate to go out of business so they start sucking the marrow out of the former company.

New interview with Andy Hunter at The Verge, saying that they've considered trying to manufacture a Bookshop device, and are in talks with Kobo to let customers read Bookshop books on Kobo readers
