That sounds like the Kobo compatibility is something that Bookshop is doing itself, so likely they are adding ADE as an option for reading.

Kindle compatibility is instead stated as something that Amazon need to be involved with, so perhaps they are trying to get it to work like Libby books do in the US where the Kindle platform does all of the work.

Of course we know that DRM doesn't stop piracy and the real solution for the Publishers is to endorse DRM free. Otherwise Amazon will control the market as KFX always has some form of DRM even if the content was requested to be DRM free.

If Bookshop adds ADE that's a cost they have to swallow. Cost is one reason that Amazon abandoned Adobe and did their own DRM ever since

Interesting. I wonder if this is like some of the pricing I see on Amazon.com where playing with Tor gives different pricing depending on your exit node.

Are you sure you were looking at the ebook?

When I did the search, I didn't see the ebook and had to select "Ebook" under "Format" to see the ebook.

Tor has said they have not lost any sales due to going DRM free.

I used to know some people online who only pirated eBooks that came with DRM but not DRM-free eBooks.

I had clicked on the ebook button at the top of the page so was assuming that I was looking at the ebook edition.

I tried it again using this method, and see $12.99. Disappointing the bookshop.org is doing these pricing shenanigans. Caveat emptor.

FWIW, they've been very active on Threads saying they want to find a way to make their books more accessible. Their CEO has no idea what ADE is and asked me to email him with more information. And Kobo's CEO has actively said they're wanting to work with Bookshop so that their books can be read in Kobo. All of that is promising and I love the company for it.

I would think there would be someone with knowledge of DRM within the company.

The CEO has started an eBook selling company but doesn't know what ADE is? That's not very reassuring.

DuckDuckGo Search
You do need ADE DRM in search. ADE alone doesn't work. Then Adobe is the third hit excluding videos.

The first two are about DRM removal!

How can a CEO guide a business (and justify the really high salary) if they have no clue about said business practices and trends?

Oh wait! Sears let Amazon walk away with Mail Order. AT&T held onto the old tariff model and chased customers to competitors. And the list goes on, with CEO failing to adapt the business till to late.

Grandpa was a merchant:
