Boox devices now shipping with China-aligned AI assistant?

I came across this thread on Reddit and thought it might be of interest to the folks here as well.

Here’s a copypasta of the post (credits to Reddit user u/HIVVIH); for those interested the actual post on Reddit has screenshots of the interaction with the AI agent.

Boox now ships with a Chinese propaganda AI assistant || A broader warning against Chinese electronics

Azure GPT-3 on Boox devices got silently replaced by a creepy Chinese state censored model by Bytedance, the company behind TikTok.

This model refuses to mention anything remotely negative about China (or it's allies, like Russia, the Assad regime and North-Korea). But is happy to do so about any other country on earth.

We shouldn't accept devices delivered with such models in the west. And I would recommend anyone here to raise this issue with Boox or the authorities.
This makes me reconsider all my life choices when it comes to buying Chinese electronics.

Fun fact: it refuses to answer any prompt mentioning "Winnie the Pooh", so at least the internet achieved something here.

I don't see the problem here. Whether it's a chinese-based AI or an US-based AI makes no difference for me. Both versions will be censored in one way or another.

Luckily the Europeans are too stupid or too lazy to develop their own AI (together with a really secure OS that doesn't want to phone home). Especially the damn EU or countries like Germany rather want to regulate and censor what other nations have developed. So I certainly will get another layer of censorship above the already implemented censorship layers in the near future.

Still, I keep my readers offline and use very little Onyx software so I don't even know where this shows up.

A year or so ago "AI" advice on technical matters from Google was laughable. I still try to avoid it (there's no switching it off) but if it points me in a direction on technical matters I may pursue that direction without relying on its accuracy.

I agree that the "Chinese propaganda" aspect isn't much to write home about. I don't understand why some people are completely paranoid about foreign propaganda and spying and utterly blind to the same thing at home. They are worried about buying a Chinese device (as if all devices are not manufactured in China), but then insist on using Google Play, other Google products, Microsoft products, etc.

If anything I'm against this AI thing since it's bloat. I'd much rather they reduce the number of apps on their devices in general. I don't use any Boox apps and I don't want them. They take up unnecessary space on my devices.

I don't see how AI would help me in my reading.

I only have the TUC from Boox. But when I remember correctly there wasn't much bloatware directly connected to Boox on the device. There's much more bloatware on any Android device with numerous Google apps I don't use and always deactivate or deinstall.
I really have had worse Android based devices with countless apps compared to the TUC.

All ai chat bots are censored to a large degree, and even have political leanings build into them.

Chinese are just seeing how it's done in the west and are copying it with their own agendas. Everything being unregulated as it is, this may prove a major problem for the future.

They have a ton of unnecessary apps (at least to me), but it's probably not the visible ones (calendar, calculator, music player, gallery, etc) that are the problem. I think it might be that their OS, notes app and reader app are not well optimized and take up a lot of size.

I might be wrong about that, but Onyx doesn't present those facts, so there's not way to be certain. NeoReader (the default reading app) and Notes are both unavailable as standalone apps - they have to be accessed through the system UI or widgets. There's no way to ascertain how much space they take.

Their system takes up a lot of space, but that might just be modern Android.

You are definitely right about bloatware on normal phones/tablets.

I use Firefox so this may not apply to any other browsers (I don't know). But in Firefox you can turn the idiot Google AI "stuff" off. Just install the udm14 add-on.

As far as propaganda included in AI, it's not like the Chinese have a monopoly on it. Google is pretty good at it themselves.

That's a complex question as ALL LLM are pretty useless and misleading anyway.

Obviously the kind of nonsense returned is different. We are better off (environment, privacy, plagiarism, transparency, accuracy) without any them. See Apple AI headlines. Basically lies or garbage.

You should define "totalitarian state". Depending on the definition the EU may already be a "totalitarian (super)state". You may have to define "qualitative difference" as well, because I really can't judge what you mean with this phrase.

Of course there are differences if one AI censors all things X and another everything about Y. Then the answers regarding X and Y will deliver different results.
I guess there won't be an commerically available uncensored AI - ever. For a truly uncensored AI you would be to set up one for yourself, which - for a universal AI -may be hardly realistic considering the training material and the energy costs. It may work for special, very narrow puposes.
