Similar to the Expanse/Revelation Space is G.S. Jennsen's universe starting with Starshine.
Tanya Huff had a new Confederation universe novel in 2015, does that make it contemporary? Mil, no shooting colonists. Oddball alien bits. Not contemporary but a longtime comfort re-read is Kate Elliot's Jaran series. More like Foreigner where its not about the science, and like Foreigner lots of world building. Romance aspect but no sex scenes. Last edited by artifact; 01-29-2017 at 12:45 PM. Reason: Edit: Whoops. Mentioned Confederation previously. |

Just above every page of comments is a blue bar with a "Thread Tools" drop down menu. In that menu is an item for subscribing to a thread without posting, in case you just want to lurk there.

Quote:
Are you looking for books from the point of view of aliens? Hal Clement's Heavy Planet, containing the novels Mission of Gravity and Star Light, are about centipede-like aliens living on a planet where gravity is about 3 times Earth's at the equator, and 700g at the poles. A lot of his novels are either about aliens or human-alien interaction, but no military is involved. Unfortunately, he's another dead American SF author where it is easier to get his works as ebooks in the UK than it is in the US. |

Best I've read in these genres in the past couple of years:
His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik (alternative history with dragons during Napoleonic wars) Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch (Fantasy/Magcal Realism) Demoniac Dance by Jaq D. Hawkins (Fantasy with goblins and dragons) Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton (Fantasy in mock-Arabic setting) Time Shifters by Shanna Lauffey (Time travel) Last edited by ReadingManiac; 03-17-2017 at 06:22 AM. ReadingManiac, which Time Shifters are you referring to? I see several books with that name.

I just finished reading both John Dies at the End and This Book is Full of Spiders. I really enjoyed both. The first book in particular hit some good Lovecraftian notes for me. Now I'm strongly considering giving The Sword of Truth series a go.

Over time I have seen good things written about David Edding's The Belgariad series. After looking into it several times, it appears that it is finally available for the Kindle at Amazon US so I can finally give it a try.

It's been decades since I read th Belgariad, but I do recall plowing through a lot of it back then.
