All seven of the "weekday-named" titles (i.e. the first seven) in Harry Kemelman's Rabbi Small series are the Open Road Monday "Special Delivery" sale, at $1.99 for the rest of today only at Kindle US and most other US sellers as well. Many of these, along with a few of the non-weekday-named titles, have been on sale before so check carefully before buying. I'm quite fond of this series, and others on here have also been enthusiastic about it in the past...

Just a warning for those that "travel" - The original title is Dead Cold. It's published in the USA as A Fatal Grace.

(OT I hate it when publishers do that)

Thanks, I remember reading some of those long ago, maybe in the 70s, and enjoying them back then. I picked up a couple of them here. The Audible whisper-sync versions, read by George Guidall, are listed at $3.50, nice, he's one of my favorite narrators.

Free today on Amazon UK - Prejudicial Error by Bill Blum

Spoiler:
John Phillip Solomon, former chief trial deputy of the L.A. district attorney’s office finds a second home at Swanson’s Bar and Grille.

Since his resignation from the D.A’s office, he’d done his best with small-time criminal cases.

So, finding a place to drown his sorrows seemed appropriate.

Lead dancer, Sally Sutton, kept the Mustang Club ahead of its competition. Fully packed until the lights went out, the Mustang Club was popular amongst business men and general party-animals.

But ‘Mustang Sally’ hadn’t always lived her life in the limelight.

Coming from a small Nebraska farm, her career aspirations had taken her along several small-time roles, before she was noticed.

Sally was tight with some of the local police. Particularly Jim Rowinski, a SWAT team specialist who was gearing himself to becoming a homicide detective. Hot-headed and rash, he would do anything to get his way.

When Joe Richards, a fifteen-year veteran is shot dead outside the Mustang Club, in Sally’s presence, Juan Javahn Thomas, notorious for his gang-banging lifestyle, is arrested.

Homicide Lieutenant Tom Gallagher, Rowinski and Mary Delgado, the only female member of the arrest team, are present at the time of the arrest.

To Solomon’s surprise, Judge Burton Lawler and D.A. Simon Lasker appoint him as the public defender in the case of Richards’s murder. Worse still, he was to go up against the prosecutor, Howard Ainsworth, the man who had taken his place as chief deputy, his arch-nemesis!

In a bid to redeem himself, Solomon takes on the case. Ignoring all the insecurities that engulf him, he launches himself into the electrifying thrill of the courtroom.

Working with his ally, Jimmy Johnson and going up against his former lover, Mary, Solomon’s task is taken up a notch.

In the courtroom, as the trial unfolds, Solomon races against his opponent.

Determination driving him, the details that unfold point to Sally knowing more than she originally let on.

Bringing Sally back in under the heat of scrutiny, she breaks. It is all Solomon needs, yet the outcome is one no one was expecting…

Free today on Amazon UK - The Chartreuse Clue (Davey Goldman Series Book 1) by William F. Love

Spoiler:
Bishop Francis Regan is a busy man. Wheelchair-bound for some time, he is not always the easiest of men to get on with.

But then, as the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of New York, he has plenty on his mind…

And on his patch, he has at least one rather turbulent priest. Which is how Bishop Regan has come to be involved in a case of murder.

Fortunately, Bishop Regan’s assistant is David Goldman, an ex-cop with a host of useful friends, a side-line as a private investigator and an unconventional approach to crime-fighting.

Keen to help his boss, who has a personal and professional interest in this case, Goldman sets about finding the killer. Who would have killed a young teacher in cold blood, leaving the knife sticking from her chest?

Surely not a Catholic priest, however misguided?

It is Goldman’s job to find out, and where his own faculties fail him, David has the razor-sharp brain of Bishop Regan to fall back on.

Together they investigate, despite the local police force, and ultimately gain entry to the closed, self-interested world in which the dead woman lived.

Here there is a host of suspects; the greedy, selfish brother and sister-in-law; employees and acolytes desperate to hold onto power and some downright unpleasant individuals.

But when Goldman meets the dead woman’s best friend, the pace of his investigation picks up and it is not long before the killer is identified.

But will that be the end of the matter? It seems likely that there is more to play out before justice can finally be done…

Free today on Amazon UK - Angel Without Mercy (Agnes Carmichael Mysteries Book 1) by Anthea Cohen

Spoiler:
In the hospital of St. Jude’s, nobody likes Marion Hughes…

As the night duty’s Superintendent Nurse, Miss Hughes is feared and loathed by all when she goes on her rounds.

If there’s one little thing she thinks wrong, no matter how small, she will find it, report it and hold it over your head.

For Nurse Carmichael, who desperately wants to get away from the children’s ward and into a Sister’s position, a bad report from Miss Hughes could end her career prospects in a heartbeat.

For Nurse Hiram Jones, it means being caught stealing sleeping pills for his addicted lover, John.

As Hiram works on the male geriatric ward, it’s easy enough to blame the memories of the old buggers. But he knows Miss Hughes isn’t fooled.

What’s more, Miss Hughes is willing to bend and abuse the rules when it suits her – like getting in Sir James Hatfield for an emergency night surgery.

Sir James has been recently widowed and Miss Hughes is more than determined to make him ‘Mr. Right’ – even if it means dragging up his unfortunate past.

Meanwhile, Miss Hughes is also sure she recognises the new registrar surgeon, Nigel Denton, from something very salacious. She can’t quite place where though.

But no matter, even if Miss Hughes hasn’t got dirt on Nigel, she’ll certainly vocally disapprove of his more than casual drinking after surgery.

Even the janitors and the cleaning lady, Mrs Upton, are not free from Miss Hughes’ pernickety demands.

Her attitude may rub both staff and patients the wrong way – earning her many a derogatory nickname – but Miss Hughes’ efficiency keeps her a hospital staple.

It seems they will never get rid of the so-called, ‘angel’ without mercy.

But when tensions are this high and so many people, have so much to lose; it only takes one person to finally snap…

All four titles in the Alix London series by Charlotte & Aaron Elkins have dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US, including the most recent, The Trouble with Mirrors, which I haven't noticed on sale before. This series, like Elkins' Chris Norgren series, is set in the art world, and not in the forensics of the Gideon Oliver books, but I still really like it.

link for all four: https://www.amazon.com/gp/search/?se...on&price=0-200

Titles are:
  • A Dangerous Talent
  • A Cruise To Die For
  • The Art Whisperer
  • The Trouble with Mirrors

The Glimpses of the Moon is the ninth and last (not counting collections of short stories) in Edmund Crispin's Gervase Fen series. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Glimpses-Moon...dp/B0062N39B6/

Spoiler:
Quote:
A week after the supposed murderer is convicted, an elderly man gives him an alibi and the person who this is revealed to is none other than Gervase Fen, someone who will never be satiated by the obvious...

When the victim's head is sent floating down the river, the village's rural calm is shattered. Soon the corpses are multiplying, and the entire community is involved in the hunt for an unspecified amount of criminals. Whilst a rector, a major, the police and a journalist, desperate for the scoop of the century, chase false trails, it is left to Gervase Fen, Oxford don and amateur criminologist, to uncover the sordid truth.

Equal parts compelling, witty and ingenuous, this novel is a classic example of great British detective fiction.

First published in 1977, Glimpses of the Moon was Edmund Crispin's ninth and final novel.

link for all four: https://www.amazon.com/gp/search/?se...on&price=0-200

Titles are:
  • A Dangerous Talent
  • A Cruise To Die For
  • The Art Whisperer
  • The Trouble with Mirrors
£3.98 on Amazon.co.uk reduced from £8.99. Still a bit rich for me so will keep an eye out for further reductions.
