I will produce one of these books with the most content list entries two versions: one way links & two way links (there and back) - and compare (speed or whatever).

The thing is, if you do the link(s) back to the internal ToC as I described, you will be able to access the internal ToC from ANY PLACE in the book.

It would only look awful if you set your styling in your CSS to make it look awful... but that would all be on you, not simply on the fact that there is a link in the header.

As a matter of fact, you could even make it so you can't tell that it is a link at all - if you choose - with a simple:

a {color:inherit; text-decoration:none}

But then you would probably want to have a note (somewhere) letting the user know that they can click on the header to go back to the contents.

In any case...this proves that it only looks bad if you choose to make it look bad...

...and it's still just your opinion....
