Baring-Gould, Sabine: Eve: A Novel. v1. 20 Dec 2021

A tale of suspense and romance, set in the windswept spaces of Dartmoor.

On a wild and blustering evening, making their way homeward across the moor, Eve and her half-sister Barbara encounter three strangers. When one of the men is severely injured in a disastrous fall from his horse, naturally they take him to their home to recover. He (Jasper) confesses that money intended to repay Eve’s father has been stolen. Meanwhile, his mysterious companion Martin, a man of dark and violent passion, develops designs upon the thoughtless pleasure-seeking Eve. Now begins a web of suspense and suspicion, muddled identities, confused accusations…

============
The Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould (28 January 1834 – 2 January 1924) was an Anglican priest, antiquarian and folklorist, novelist, and eclectic scholar. One of the most prolific and popular writers of the late-Victorian period, he wrote more than 150 books and contributed countless magazine articles. His folkloric studies resulted in The Book of Were-Wolves (1865), one of the most frequently cited studies of lycanthropy; followed by numerous volumes on other arcane subjects. He is remembered particularly as a writer of hymns, the best-known being “Onward, Christian Soldiers.”
