Reed, Myrtle: Old Rose and Silver

Rose lives quietly in the country with her aunt Francesca, restless and wondering what her life will hold as she turns forty. Her young cousin, Isabel, comes to stay with the ladies as their longtime neighbor, Colonel Kent, returns from abroad with his son, Allison, a world-renowned violinist. Allison and Rose bond over music as the shallow Isabel amuses herself with engaging the gentleman's attention to herself, until tragedy strikes and everything changes.

It's typical Myrtle Reed, saccharine in parts, with rather Victorian notions of the woman's traditional role battling with some more enlightened notions about career women, enlivened by a truly hilarious pair of minor characters in the Crosby Twins, Romeo and Juliet. Originally published in 1909; text from Project Gutenberg.
