The main story involves the hoped-for marriage of Mathilde, a young woman of means, to Pete, a young man without the breeding and resources her family expects. Along the way, the relationship of the young couple and the foundation of their love for each other is contrasted with her mother’s and her grandfather’s romances.

Alice Duer Miller (July 28, 1874 – August 22, 1942) was an American writer whose poetry actively influenced political opinion. Her feminist verses impacted on the women’s suffrage issue, while her verse-play The White Cliffs encouraged U.S. entry into World War II. She also wrote novels and screenplays. Her first book, The Modern Obstacle, was published 1903, but she scored her first major success with Come Out of the Kitchen in 1916. That story was made into a play and later the 1948 film Spring in Park Lane.
