Free/Bargain Horror November 2012

Everyone welcome to post their finds here. Please do a search before posting to avoid duplication, and please try not to post self-pubs. Thanks.

Books listed in my posts are from Amazon US unless otherwise indicated.

Two more Robert Walker freebies:

Flesh Wars II: Serpentine

Quote:
Two Americans chase a disease-spreading monster throughout India, leaving death and mutilation in its wake.

But the ancient beast has even bigger appetites, and sets its sights on America, intent of controlling the leader of the free world.

Can Detective Eric Brannon and Dr. Angelica Hunter stop it before it enslaves the human race? Or while the world succumb to a revolting orgy of sex and violence?

(This is a sequel to the cult classic THE SERPENT FIRE. Approximately 100,000 words. With a special cameo by Dr. Jessica Coran from Walker's INSTINCT series.)
Disembodied

Quote:
THE MURDERER

Psychic adventurer Jacob Koslor's body has been destroyed, hideously hacked to pieces by a bloodthirsty maniac. And his killer is under the power of a terrible evil--a supernatural force that can bend men to its will and make them relive their worst nightmares... fatally.

THE OVERMIND

But Catherina Vaughan, Kosler's assistant, knows her mentor's astral self is still alive, for she can communicate with him. And she knows Kosler's agony has just begun: His demonic killer is out to destroy his soul.

Now Jacob and Cath must discover the deadly secret of the all-powerful overmind before its control is total. Before it begins to tear minds from helpless flesh and create a legion of...

THE DISEMBODIED

(This book was originally published in paperback.)
Free from Medallion Press - Something Bad by Richard Satterlie.

Quote:
A young man must remember his past to save his family's future in this thrilling novel. Gabe Peterson's memories go no earlier than when he was 12 years old, yet when a strange little man comes to town, he feels an odd sense of familiarity. Mysterious natural disasters start claiming lives, and the events soon trigger glimpses of the past for Gabe. Once a tragic event of his youth is recalled, Gabe can see that his family is next in danger and must race to save them before it's too late.

Australian horror author Shane Jiraiya Cummings' lovecraftian novella, Requiem for the Burning God, is free at Amazon.

Quote:
Evil festers beneath the mountains of Peru, and British Great War ace turned mercenary Captain Max Calder unwittingly stumbles into the thick of it! Confronted by Lovecraftian horrors, the machinations of a world-spanning conglomerate, and a lunatic song that haunts his every step, Calder may pay the ultimate price to save the world from danger. Requiem for the Burning God is a grand pulp adventure novella inspired by the darkest imaginings of the Cthulhu Mythos.

Review
"A fantastic blend of pulp adventure and Lovecraftian horror. Shane Jiraiya Cummings delivers a cracking tale and proves he is still one of Australia's leading voices in dark fantasy fiction."
--David Conyers, author of The Spiraling Worm

"Like the stories of Robert E. Howard and L. Ron Hubbard before it, Requiem for the Burning God reminds us great pulp fiction is very much alive and waiting to thrill us all over again!"
--Benjamin Kane Ethridge, author of Black & Orange

"A story of epic scope and grand pulp-style adventure, with everything from flesh-eating ooze to biplanes dogfighting zeppelins ... it is the sort of story that I wish my role-playing sessions ran like!"
--Andrew J. McKiernan, HorrorScope

About the Author
Shane Jiraiya Cummings lives in Perth, Western Australia. He has been acknowledged as "one of Australia's leading voices in dark fantasy", had more than sixty short stories published in Australia, USA, and Europe, and his work has been translated in Spanish, French, and Polish. Shane has won two Ditmar Awards, and he has been nominated for more than twenty other major awards including Spain's Premios Ignotus. Shane is an Active Member of the Horror Writers Association and former Vice President of the Australian Horror Writers Association. When he is not writing, Shane is an editor and journalist by day and sword fighting instructor by night.

Featured title A View from the Lake by Greg Gifune. Preorder for tomorrow (11/6).

Quote:
Death is not the end.

Katherine and James ran a small lakeside resort in Blissful Point, Massachusetts, during the hectic summer months, then endured the often-desolate winters in relative isolation. Their lives were happy until one morning when the body of a young boy was found floating in the lake. From that moment Katherine watched as her husband began to spiral into insanity. Then he vanished without a trace.

Now, months later, as a blizzard descends over Blissful Point, Katherine faces her final winter alone on the lake. But things are no longer what they seem. Is something out there, haunting the snowy woods, waiting in the lake, luring her toward the same madness that claimed James?

a pulp-y horror title - The Flesh Eaters by LA Morse - $1.91 this week at FW

The Flesh Eaters by LA Morse is new at Fictionwise, and with the 15% new discount and 55% coupon this week, it works out to $1.91. Also available at BN and Amaz, but costs more there.

Links: FW BN Amaz

Quote:
Cannibalistic cave dwellers. Huge, terrifying clans roaming the moors, seeking out human flesh to rend and consume. It sounds like the horrors of prehistoric savages, but it falls well within recorded history of civilized men. The first half of the fifteenth century saw savagery and fear that erased the line between man and beast. Just eight miles east of the modern city of Edinburgh, Sawney Bean and his murderous family prowled the Scottish coasts, robbing travelers and consuming their victims. "Stick? stock? stuck. You've run out of luck. Kill... kill? kill. We eat our fill," they chant as they descend upon their prey. There's little the community can do but be hunted. This horrifying tale of nightmare-inducing monsters--inspired by true events--comes into stark reality in THE FLESH EATERS, an imaginative novel by Edgar Award winning author L.A. Morse. Beware, any readers faint of heart. It's those soft hearts that are the tenderest meat.

LA Morse also wrote three pulp-y mysteries, now available in ebook, that work out to the same price at FW this week. One of them, The Old Dick, won the 1982 Edgar Award for Best Paperback and was a finalist for the 1982 Shamus Award for Best Paperback. Thread with links here.

Necro has a lot of their stuff on sale or reduced - $2.99 to $3.99 down from $6.99. Some are just novellas. Their stuff is really hard core, graphic, pornographic, grotesque - extreme horror so be forewarned if you're not familiar with them!

Another Permuted Press freebie - Plaguesville, USA by Jim LeVigne.

Quote:
The year is 2075, and the vast majority of humanity is dead.

The global outbreak of a new strain of virus wiped out over 99% of the population. The lone hope rests on the slim, unready shoulders of Dr. Justin Kaes and a small team of specialists from the Center for Disease Control. The researchers have discovered a cure for the plague in the blood of a cantankerous 102 year old. But there’s one minor problem: the old man couldn’t care less whether humanity lives or dies. And he most certainly doesn’t feel like going on a road trip to sunny California.

On the way to the coast lie murderous tribes, cults, voracious animals, and the toxic remains of civilization. They face a world gone backwards, technology and industry reduced to rusting garbage. Their mission seems doomed… But there are a few decent souls still out there, citizens of Plaguesville, USA.

Well, I read it, and I thought it was a bit of a mess. The writing was free of obvious grammatical errors, but the story never got weird enough, and the characters were very poorly realized. Compared to some other Lovecraftian stuff I've read recently (most notably, That Which Should Not Be by Brett Talley), it just wasn't very good...

I thought a few of the buyers of Morse's books (of which I am one), would enjoy seeing the Frank Frazetta cover from his horror novel,"The Flesh Eaters."

I'll be starting this as soon as I finish his award-winning mystery novel, "The Old Dick."

Thanks for the update. I guess this one will go to the bottom of my TBR pile. lol.

Maybe this one will be better: Mythos Revisited, a free anthology from Fantastic Horror Press.

Quote:
Mythos Revisted opens the doors once breached by H.P. Lovecraft and the like. Ten tales to scare and delight. Beware, not all doors should be opened and not all books should be read.

An Inquiry Into Ancient Texts by A.J. French
There are libraries that contain rare books but this library contains forbidden books of great evil worth the price of any transgression.

Bad Blood by Chris Stevens
A missing father, a mother with powers, two sons at odds with each other in a decrepit house with the Book. The Book can raise the dead, summon demons from beyond, and right wrongs. But the book desires blood above all else.

Tongue Lashing by Eric Styles
A son verbally abused by an arrogant father, unwittingly acquires the Book. Tonight, he gains the respect of his father but tomorrow the Book claims its fee with deathly results.

The Book of Callings by Richard Eline
It is a remarkable book with references to the sciences and the occult and when read, it offers a life idyllic and pure. That is the path to madness, the place from which no one returns.

Spawn of the Spider God by Patricia Correll
Three men search the Amazonian jungle for the fabled City of Gold and what they find does not glitter and sparkle, except with their blood.

Gammell by E. Albert Branstrom
What happened that day was child's play, she would say in later years. But four men died that day in what certainly wasn't, child's play.

For a Bit of Good Luck by Phillip Roberts
There's something in the basement and it's coming for you.

The Door by Larry Buontello
In the arid badlands of Texas stands a rundown homestead that hides a nightmare beyond the mind of man

The Painted Door by George Pastore
Even the aimless and wasted have a purpose in life and it waits behind the Painted Door.

Durango Agonistes Died Yesterday by Dave Fragments
A neighbor predicts the return of the Old Gods -- the Shambler, the Gargoyle and the One who Sleeps. Is he the oracle or a Cassandra? When a comet appears and the streets run red with blood, do you seek out him out as savior or as a friend of death?
I just finished Zombie by Joyce Carol Oates. It wasn't too bad, and there were some shocking parts, but it was too obvious that she based the character on Jeffrey Dahmer. I think if his whole story weren't so familiar it would have been a lot more horrendous. It also ended very abruptly.

Free today at Amazon: The Donzerly Light by Ryne Douglas Pearson. (First published by Schmuck & Underwood, 2010).

http://www.amazon.com/The-Donzerly-L...N%3DB0042FZQBM

Quote:
Jay Grady wakes up in handcuffs. Sitting at a table in an isolated room. Across from him sits a man who wants Jay to recount his life. Every detail of it.

If not, he'll kill him.

So begins Jay's reluctant journey to a past he's tried to forget. From his days ruling Wall Street as an impossibly intuitive stock picker, to just a few hours earlier, when he pumped six bullets into a transient outside a dying Missouri town. A drifter he'd once thought was just an ordinary man.

But he was far from ordinary. And Jay came to realize he was not a man at all, but something darker. Something sinister.

An evil he was destined to face.

Free short story Deadside in Bug City by Randy Chandler from Comet Press.

Quote:
After a weaponized virus kills 40,000 of the city's inhabitants, 1,400 of them inexplicably become reanimated. The walking dead are interred in a crumbling ghetto while authorities go to court to determine if they should be destroyed.

The walking dead seem to be little more than mindless automatons until one of them spray paints an enigmatic message on a ghetto wall.

Troubleshooter Draven is sent inside to find her and bring her out. But going among the Rotties is fraught with danger, especially when his name is on the lips of the dead.

Deadside in Bug City is a short story of approximately 20 printed pages.
Free anthology Christmas Ghost Stories: Festive Skin Crawlers with a Twist by Stewart King from Endeavor Press. Ten stories.

Quote:
A remote Cornish village on Christmas Day battered by the howling seas.

An old house that needs emptying on a Boxing Day.

A woman who spends Christmas by herself every year.

Prepare to be scared out of your wits with this collection of Christmas Ghost stories from the macabre pen of Stewart King.

While Christmas is a time of crackling fires and roasting turkeys, it can also be a time of dark nights, howling winds, creaks on the stairs, and strange noises from the cellar.

And while it a time for re-unions and parties, for some people it is also a time of loneliness and memories.

And it is not necessarily just the living members of the family that come back for the festive season.

Written in the style of the traditional masters of the genre such as Charles Dickens and MR James, each story in this collection captures the essence of Christmas - except with a deadly sting in its tail.

Stewart King's book is 48 pages long and has 10 stories????!!!!????

Trick or Tree

The man clung to the upper branches of the tree.
The jaguar started to climb up, but the tree was suddenly struck by lightening. As the tree fell, the man fell into the jaws of the jaguar and was slaugthered exactly at the same time as the tree crushed the jaguar. This incident happened during Christmas.
*

*I wrote this, not King. Nine more stories to go.
