IS IT POSSIBLE TO HAVE A SOFTWARE IN IPAD WITHOUT GETTING IT FROM APPLE STORE?
With starry eyes, I bought my new IPAD while in NYC and returned to Cuba, where I am presently working for a while. I was dreaming of all the books I was going to download. And I realized that I can´t even access Apple Store, because of the blockade. So the question is: is there any software that I could download in my Ipad without getting it from the Apple Store? I was able to download lots of apps before having the IPAD but Apple seems to be very particular...
I should be grateful for any suggestion aless |

To the best of my knowledge, apps can only be downloaded via the app store.

Well... If an iPad is jailbroken (with the Spirit JB for example: http://gizmodo.com/5533921/how-to-ja...-touch-or-ipad) an alternative App store, Cydia, is installed. That store has many free and paid apps that are not available in the Apple app store.
Once the device is jailbroken, you can also install pirated Apple app store apps, downloaded through P2P torrent sites. I am not advocating that you engage in illegal pirating activities but sooner or later you would have found out about that just by Googling. In your particular blockaded case, that type of thing seems almost justifiable. Or that could just be my peculiar sense of justice...shrug. |

Agree with Fotoman..... I do not have a JB iPad, but in your situation I think it is justified and really what else can you do. Without apps any device is useless......torrents can be your friend...

Whether you jailbreak or not you would still need access to itunes, so if your trouble with having access to the apple store is because you can't get onto itunes then it will not be solved with jailbreaking. Adding apps and adding books to apps is still primarily done through itunes (and a few work arounds like dropbox)

Enterprise developers can distribute applications outside of the app store. Developers can also install apps for development purposes.

From what I've read about Cuba's Internet restrictions you are screwed. I think you're going to have to wait until you're out of the country again to connect to the Apple Store.
As for books, there may be digital book vendors in Cuba (I have no idea... never been on Cuba's domestic Internet). So although you can't connect to the iBooks store you may be able to download epubs from other sources and read them on your iPad. |

I think the more interesting question would be, why can't you access the AppStore? Is it an isp-blockade, or apple's. Is it merely an account problem?

But I've only read about it, I don't know all the details. |

Ehm... If Cuba restricts all access, what good would cydia do? That'd need global internet too, doesn't it? |

Many many thanks for your replies. I have i tunes because I downloaded it when outside Cuba. And I have an acceptable iternet connection because of my work here. So I could either wait a month or so to be outside again and download everything and then buy books from amazons (no restriccions there, who knows why) or jailbroke it. Excuse my ignorance, but what is the downside of jailbroking things? Do I miss something?

Other than that, it's perfectly safe and you can continue syncing to iTunes, etc. |
