Which generation?
How can you tell which generation Kindle you have? I can find the serial number and firmware version and a few other things in Device Info, but nothing about generation.

I'm equally confused. I have a Paperwhite. I downloaded the update for generation 8, wrong version. Then generation 7, wrong version. Of course, some articles talk about Paperwhite generations 1,2, and 3. it's a muddled mess.

You have the Paperwhite 3 from 2015. So 1st generation paperwhite.
For anyone else needing this information, here is the link. https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kindle_Serial_Numbers |

This is what Amazon would call Kindle Paperwhite (7th Generation), popularly known as the Paperwhite 3

Confusing, isn't it? The Wikipedia listing doesn't mention "generations".
If Amazon Kindle is going to publish updates and other information based on "generation" than it's Amazon Kindle's responsibility to publish a serial number=generation list |

Yep, immensely confusing. I think Amazon developers spend a lot of time being confused, so they pass it along. It would have been so much better and straightforward to put the year in the title rather than attempt to assign a generation number which no one understands. The Kindle Paperwhite 2015 makes sense. A generation number will never hold much meaning nor be easily understood. But then, when have the Amazon developers and Kindle designers ever been smart about anything?

Oh yes... on the settings page, the Update your Kindle option was greyed out. So maybe this update is not for Generation 7 after all? Last edited by tkavan; 02-01-2017 at 11:47 PM. |
