Overall, considering the performance of our prototypes, the ongoing work with software development, and our timeline being on track, things are looking very positive as we progress towards the first shipments of the first thousands of units of the reMarkable paper tablet in the end of August.

I really hope this company succeeds. It has the potential to finally make E-ink useful for the masses, instead of being limited to reading text-files only.

I was thinking the same but at the moment with the pre-order offer the price difference is significant.

I have doubts if they will be able to sell many units at full price though, even though their device is quite exciting and their communication efforts reassuring. I'm willing to believe that they will carry on working on and improving the reader. On the other hand they are a start-up so anything may happen. Then with Sony and their strange (=off-putting) marketing strategy you never know, Sony may quietly drop support at any time.

I've been considering getting reMarkable for a long time. The only really annoying thing is the very limited storage (8GB when you can buy a 16GB card for $10) and no SD card slot...

Price comparison against Sony DPT-RP1

When comparing the pricing of the reMarkable against the Sony DPT-RP1, it is important to remember that the reMarkable preorder bundle includes the tablet, the stylus, a cover, and 10 extra stylus nibs, and shipping costs are also covered.

If you order a Sony DPT-RP1 from Amazon.com you pay 700 USD for the tablet with stylus, 60 USD for the cover, and 20 USD for 10 extra nibs. Shipping costs are also covered.

So the real comparison would be 479 USD against 780 USD, before taxes. Not that close, really. Those who preordered the reMarkable when it was priced at USD 379 get a pretty good deal.

Reading PDFs on the reMarkable

For those of us who plan to use the reMarkable to read and review PDF documents, it is interesting to see that reMarkable's CTO Martin Sandsmark made a number of contributions to the document viewer Okular in 2016, including adding pinch to zoom on touch screens.

Perhaps this is the basis for the PDF viewer on reMarkable tablet? If so, that is good news, since Okular supports a number of other backends, such as djVu, ePub, chm and XPS. It is then conceivable that document support can be easily extended to other formats in the future.

The standard PDF backend in Okular is Poppler, but people have also tried dropping in mupdf, with good performance gains. This is the same PDF backend that is used in KOReader.

No, you are comparing pre-order price versus normal price. And 13.3 against 10.2. Any comparison is not possible on size/price. Is remarKable more flexible? We'll see it. And, last, plastic based screen versus glass based; very important in these large devices.

My comment was a price vs price comparison.

Why would you want to wait for the price of the reMarkable to rise, when you can order at USD 479 now? The reMarkable has a plastic screen, not glass.

it is important, but hardly relevant in this situation, given that both the Sony and the Renarkable use plastic screens.

One reason is that you are charged now for something that might fail to meet expectations or that you might never receive. The discount comes with some risk.

Exactly, the T&C are clear about it:

Quote:
2. Cancellation of pre-orders. (...) Please note, however, that the funds raised with your pre-order may be partially invested in product development. Delivery is contingent on sufficient funds to complete the development of the products. Hence, reMarkable cannot guarantee that you will receive a full refund in all cases as the funds raised by your pre-order may be lost, either fully or partially.
I was thinking more about the "full price" I had mentioned before and it seems that reMarkable have thought it over very well. The full price isn't $716 as I came to think, the full price is $529, which is pretty reasonable given the current prices of other ereaders. So when the pre-order offer ends the price of the reader may become $529 to keep the early adopters happy for some time and they will still have enough room for "special offers" like, say, 50% off that overpriced cover or shipping.

Thanks leselysten for interesting comments about reMarkable's CTO and his involvement in the development of Okular.

Sandsmark worked on Okular? Cool! I've never used Okular on a tablet, but I use it all the time on my desktops (it's the default document viewer for KDE.)

if/when this device ships, i may consider it. but not before then. i've been burned three times funding projects that did not take off. so i'm now very wary of these crowd funded projects. one of these, of course, was the meetearl project. this project also mentioned that refunds are on the table. but it turned out not to be true.

This product reminds me of canceled PlasticLogic Que in 2010. This is what the CEO said after canceling the product -

"We recognize the market has dramatically changed, and with the product delays we have experienced, it no longer makes sense for us to move forward with our first-generation electronic reading product," Plastic Logic CEO Richard Archuleta said in a statement. "This was a hard decision, but (it) is the best one for our company, our investors and our customers."

There is no chance that a product like this will succeed. There is no market.
