Clued in: 12 mystery masters name their favourites

Here's some (not quite completely) different. In the Globe and Mail a couple of weekends ago, twelve mystery / crime fiction writers mused about their own favourite authors and provided a little blurb, each picking one.

Clued in: 12 mystery masters name their favourites includes contributions by Michael Connelly, Natasha Cooper, Harlan Coban, Gail Bowen, William Deverell, Louise Penny, Scott Turow, Quintin Jardine, Tana French, Peter Robinson, Robert Rotenberg and Trevor Ferguson.

Canada enjoys (and nurtures) a robust mystery / crime writer talent pool and each of these authors, half of them Canadian, has a new title forthcoming which is also mentioned with the blurbs. If you're not familiar with Gail Bowen (Saskatchewan tales), William Deverell (Vancouver retired lawyer), Louise Penny (Quebec police detective), Peter Robinson (English PI Banks), Robert Rotenberg (Toronto lawyer) and Trevor Ferguson, who writers as John Farrow (Sergeant-Detective Émile Cinq-Mar of Montreal police), they all have much to recommend.

So ... how do you think Michael Connelly, or Louise Penny, read in their spare time and are anxious to tell us about? The answers will surprise and delight you.

Gail Bowen

The Nero Wolfe Cookbook, by Rex Stout. Forty years ago, I read Stout’s The League of Frightened Men, and entered into a love affair that I knew would last a lifetime. Jacques Barzun praises Stout for his “sinewy, pellucid, propelling prose,” but it wasn’t Stout’s prose that drew me to his protagonist. My passion for Wolfe is carnal. He’s brilliant; he seldom leaves his elegant brownstone on West 35th Street. He solves cases; grows orchids (“my concubines: insipid, expensive, parasitic and temperamental”) and he lives to eat.
This is so true.
