Cather, Willa: Sapphira og slavepigen [Danish] v1. 04 Feb 2024

Willa (opr. Wilella) Siebert Cather (7. december 1873 ved Winchester i Virginia – 24. april 1947 i New York City) var en amerikansk forfatter af romaner, noveller og digte.

Hun kom til Nebraska, da hun var otte-ni år gammel, da hendes fader købte land i nærheden af Red Cloud. Livet på den åbne prærie med dens spredte befolkning af nordmænd, svenskere, bøhmere og tyskere fik stor indflydelse på hendes senere værker.

Hun gik ud af University of Nebraska-Lincoln i nittenårs-alderen, hvorefter hun drog til Pittsburg og senere til New York, hvor hun underviste i bl.a. latin og engelsk og arbejdede som redaktør ved forskellige blade, bl.a. McClure's Magazine (et illustreret månedsmagasin, som levede af skandale- og borende journalistik samt romaner og noveller), indtil hun fra omkring 1912 helt helligede sig sit forfatterskab. I 1923 fik hun Pulitzers roman-pris for One of Ours og National Institute of Arts and Letters' guldmedalje i 1944. Da Sinclair Lewis fik Nobelprisen i litteratur i 1930, udtalte han, at den burde være gået til Willa Cather.

På dansk findes kun seks af hendes romaner samt én novelle; af hovedværket – "Prærie-trilogien" O Pioneers!, The Song of the Lark, og My Antonia – findes kun den sidste oversat.

Om bogen
I Black Creek Valley i Virginia er Sapphira Dodderidge Colbert i 1856 en af de forholdsvis få, som stadig holder slaver – noget som hendes mand, mølleren Henry, i stigende grad har svært ved at goutere. Men Sapphira styrer sit hus med jernhånd, hjulpet af slavekvinden Till. Sapphira er bundet til en kørestol, og da hun finder ud af, at Henry, som lever det meste af sit liv i møllen uden for hendes rækkevidde, kun vil have Tills datter, den smukke unge slavepige Nancy, til at gøre rent og servere hos sig i møllen, bliver hun – i øvrigt ganske uden grund – voldsomt jaloux og begynder at mishandle Nancy. Men med hjælp fra Sapphiras datter, som er modstander af slaveriet, flygter Nancy til Canada, og vender først tilbage femogtyve år senere.

Sapphira og slavepigen udkom første gang i USA i 1940, og var Willa Cathers sidste roman.
