Apostrophe in book title
Hi all.
I am doing an eBook conversion for a book that has an apostrophe in the title. When converted to .mobi, the title of the book, when displayed at the top of every page, gets garbled up, and instead of the apostrophe, it is replaced by "'" This is not a problem when viewing on Kindle Previewer or Kindle for Mac (desktop), but when side loaded onto my Kindle app for my iPad, this is where I see the book title displayed incorrectly. Any advise is appreciated. |

Moved to the Mobi forum.
This is almost certainly a character encoding issue. You're not specifying the correct code page in the source HTML. |

It sounds like a bug in the Kindle for iOS. Solution, don't use an apostrophe.

Wasn't there some sort of convoluted process to sideload a kindlebook (in the same format a customer would download) to an iPad?
It may all be different now, but at one point, I know there was something about kindlebooks sideloaded to iPads not being representative of what a customer would actually be seeing. |

ADDED: I agree with HarryT that the root cause is most likely the wrong character encoding being used for the apostrophe. If the OP is sideloading a dual-MOBI file then Kindle for iOS will use the old-MOBI part of the file while the other apps will use the KF8 portion. Last edited by jhowell; 08-03-2017 at 02:06 PM. |

There's no problem with a REAL apostrophe in an ebook title. I have one such.
The problem probably arises when one uses the html tag ' which is a common error. It creates a prime symbol, which is like a single straight quote but fatter. It is properly used to indicate feet and minutes in numerical presentations like 6' 3" or lat/lon. A true apostrophe is simply a right single curly quote. See for example the cover of Webster's Collegiate Dictionary https://www.amazon.com/Merriam-Webst.../dp/0877798095 (which has two of them!). |

' doesn't create a prime symbol. It creates a single, straight quote. There's an entirely different entity for the prime symbol.
' = ' ′ = ′ ″ = ″ 6′ 3″ Last edited by DiapDealer; 08-04-2017 at 07:26 PM. |

Make sure all your source files are encoded in UTF-8 and that you define UTF-8 as the character encoding in all XML and HTML files. Then use the correct UTF-8 characters for the job.
