FOXNEWS: The secret to ebook sales is...
http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/...ntcmp=obinsite
Turns out iPad sales skew male and ereader sales skew female. Not everwhelmingly but enough to make financial impact, especially when install bases are factored in. For example, as noted elsewhere, and above, womens magazines on Nook outsell their iPad editions, even though iPad outsells Nook about 10:1. This means, of course, that typical Nook owners are 10 times more likely to buy those mags than the typical iPad owner. They don't address "men's" magazines, like Maxim and the like though. (Does Apple even allow those mags into their corral?) Lots of things go into those numbers, of course, but they do suggest that magazine publishers, in particular, need to recalibrate and diversify their digital strategies. (And genre ebook publishers, too, but the smart ones already knew where their bread is buttered.) Last edited by fjtorres; 06-15-2011 at 11:17 AM. |

It seems to be a well thought article...staying only a hair away from being insulting to women readers.

Once again: Indeed, further evidence that sex sells everything.

Currently fighting the urge to write something full of nonsense, but put a rockin' image of some Valkyrie wearing next to nothing, and see how many sales it gets.

So... the checkout line at the grocers = B&N and the book stand at Home Depot = the
iStore? There are only IPads & Color Nooks as reading devices? Pulp Romances don't outsell most other pbooks? How does the ebook sales differ from the pbook sales in this regard? (As a Texan, I find it hard to believe that the typical "male" Apple customer, has any idea that "Home Depot" exists.) The article seems full of skewed assumptions, from my point of view. Luck; Ken |

1- They do list the percentages, which show the skews are low. But real.
2- B&N has been bragging about their magazine sales, so their numbers are available; Amazon's aren't. Ditto for other vendors. 3- The "emag" discussion, for the past year, has been dominated by a publisher stampede to get on iPad. The reported numbers suggest the stampede is looking in the wrong direction. 4- I agree that Apple's hype halo doesn't exactly acknowledge the home depot demographic. But then, Jobs himself is a brie-and-cheese kinda guy, not a beer and bar-b-q guy. And Apple products are supposed to reflect *his* tastes... ...which means tech toys yes, bodice rippers no. (Besides, Apple's Puritan censors deplore "heaving bosoms".) One thing *I* get from those numbers is that they should serve as a cold shower to the "tablets will kill ereaders" faction of the multifunction device fan club. Precisely because we're only looking at one ereader vendor, and not even the dominant player. Last edited by fjtorres; 06-16-2011 at 07:32 AM. |

^ lol. Good stuff. I have read a couple of Bolan's books in the past.
Indeed, no bodice-ripping to be found [well, not quite]... |
