Extra blank pages
I've almost finished making my first e-book, and everything is coming in nicely. The one problem I'm having is with extraneous blank pages. I've tested this on a Kindle, and things look okay, but when I put this on the iPad, blank pages appear towards the front of the book. All my material is there, but the spaces between the cover, the title page, and the preface are filled with one or two blank pages.
I'm assuming it's probably a conversion problem. This file has been through InDesign, Sigil, and Calibre. But I don't see anything in the code, so does anybody have any ideas? Below is what the code for the title page looks like. It's an image, just because I thought it looked better that way. And it's in between the h1 tags, because I wanted it to show up in the TOC as "Title page." Quote:

Ok, more information. I changed the conversion settings in Calibre so it wouldn't insert page breaks before h1 and h2 tags (the default). Now the extraneous blank pages have vanished, but the title page image has been replaced by a blank page.
Now I'm really confused. |

Yet another update. I've found that wrapping my images in svg markers solves the problem with images.
So hurray! Everything looks good with one EPUB. I've moved on to my next one. This one is a bit longer, but not as graphically complicated. For the most part, everything is coming out OK, but if I put the EPUB into iBooks and start flipping through the pages, some weirdness happens. Once again, random blank pages are appearing out of nowhere. These ones are even harder to nail down. Let's say that I reach the end of a chapter on page 99. I'm looking at it in landscape, and the chapter ends on the right hand side. I turn the page, and pages 100-101 are blank. I turn the page again, I'm still at pages 100-101, but now the text has started again. If I flip back, those two ghost blank pages are gone. They're only appearing when I move in one direction. I'm completely at a loss for this one. Is this just an iBooks bug, or is it something I can fix? There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to which chapters it occurs in. |

That one sounds like an iBooks bug. I don't have an iPad, but Liz Castro has a blog which mentions iBook oddities from time to time, and she wrote a book that you may find helpful. Today she writes about embedding fonts in iBooks, in fact. The book is in the right column of her blog.

I actually already own Liz's book... very useful for the most part, but I can't find anything about this bug in it.
On the other hand, I just updated to 1.2 and the bug seems to be gone. So no harm no foul, I guess. |
