Just got a Ezreader :D + A question please.

Hey Guys,

So thanks to this site and some googling I decided on getting an Astak EZReader.

A little backstory: Basically I been reading books on my cell phone and started getting headaches from it, so I decided to give E-ink a shot..

So far its been a pleasant experience, I am impressed how the screen is - I never saw e-ink before! It almost looks.. well fake? If that makes sense? I feel like i am not even looking at a normal digital screen, like a real piece of paper with ink on it. I love all the angles you can turn the thing and still clearly see the screen. Oh well I am sure you are all used to it, but for some one new its really impressive haha..

Ok now to my question. So far everything seems pretty cut and dry with it, I downloaded Calibre based on everyones suggestion. I downloaded the meta data for my books that I already had and also converted them to epub just for the heck of it, neat program so far. I can't get the chapter new page feature to work but I am sure I am doing something wrong. I thought it would just detect the words Chapter X and put a new page but I guess I gotta put some kinda tag in there.. Sigh another day I guess haha..

Bah I keep getting side tracked! What I really want to know is this: If I have more then one book on the EZReader and I switch between a few of them, will my place be saved? Also how do bookmarks work, if I make a bookmark for say Book A, then I load up book B is it going to show all of book As bookmarks or are they separate.

I mean I don't really jump around in books like that, but I loaded up a PDF file that I am studying for work and then I have a book I am reading for enjoyment lol.. Would hate to lose my place in either ya know?

Also I noticed when I opened a few different books and then i later searched to find my place in another book, once it found the spot and I quit the search the whole reader felt very slow. Instead of real quick font size changes and page turns everything was extremely slow. Do books stay open even after I open a new book or maybe I just overloaded it with all my searching and junk haha?

Oh one other thing I read in a thread that if you turn it off completely the time won't be saved. No big deal, didn't even see a clock on it anyway lol - but will my bookmarks and place be saved it I totally turn it off? Oh well hope all this made sense!

Thanks

You location in each book is remembered and bookmarks are on a per book basis. There are some difference in how you set bookmarks and goto them which depends on the format of the particular file. The pocket pro supports many different file formats but uses different programs to read the various files thus you can expect slightly different behaviors depending on which format you are trying to use. Most things are pretty consistent however so you will catch on to the differences fairly quickly. Our wiki has quite a bit of information on the pocket pro and the Hanlin Reader which is used by the pocket pro.

Dear Ogrillion:

Welcome to our Merry Little Band!! I am Robertb and I work for Astak. Did you buy the EZReader 6 inch or the 5 inch Pocket PRO? I do thank you!!

You will not see the clock unless you do one of the later firmware upgrades at: www.theEZread.com/html under "support". New devices do not have the firmware upgrades pre-installed. You only need to install the latter one (not all of them) Then, yes, if you totally shut off the device you will need to reset the clock. This is because the clock does not have its own battery. On the other hand... I NEVER shut off my device. That is the beauty of E-Ink... it uses no power to display a page. You can leave it on and not wear down the battery!

Have you read our FAQ sheet yet? That is at: www.theEZreader.com under "support" also.

PLEASE, when the Battery Charge Life meter shows you have less than half a charge left... RECHARGE fully!! Do not let the battery go way down low. The User Manual is not correct there. Trust the FAQ sheet which is updated every month. The User Manual was written about a year ago.

I WANT you to have a good experience and love your device!

Cool thanks for the reply. So far I love the device its been working out well. I ended up getting the 5inch model. I upgraded to the newest firmware last night so I have the clock and everything is working well.

The only issue I had were bookmarks were not being saved. But after searching for a bit I read it has to do with spaces in filenames - got rid of those! Then my bookmarks seem to save correctly

Looking forward to checking out more features of it. E-ink is amazing my coworkers couldn't believe how neat it was.

Also thanks to advice here I signed up for the philly library just waiting on my card to arrive in the mail - can't wait to see all the free books I can get

Thanks again for this forum, and all the help you guys at Astak do - never before have I seen a company so involved in the community before.

Dear Ogrillion:

Thank you. I am very pleased the Pocket PRO is pleasing you. TRY the MP3. I have an iPod and the Pocket PRO sounds far better with good headphones.

Yes, we do TRY very much to be a part of the community. Astak reaches out a lot. The colors of the Pocket PRO were decided by MobileRead Forum members and features like the clock and search engine came about because so many asked for it. Astak and I look upon ourselves as never being a big player. Yes, we would like to be a lot bigger and sell millions of devices... but our niche is largely one of being unique. We have great devices that few will ever even hear about. Yet... we see this forum as a chance to get feedback from purchasers that will make us better; and make our end users happier than with other devices.

Our newest effort is: www.EZread.com. That eBook Store will be different. Right now it has 200,000 "pay" titles PLUS the entire FREE Google Library of 1 MILLION eBooks. Shirtly, that will make a huge jump in usage as we are going with a forum on that site, independent authors, free novels that are normally "pay", the lowest prices, a "Meet The Author" section, and more. The forum will permit our eBook Specialists to get your suggestions, recommend great books you will like, take criticism and compliments, etc.

The big thing is we are VERY different with that site. We are going out to local Book Shows ( just got back from L.A. Times Festival of Books) and we are going after great authors with great novels that are just converting to electronic book formats.
