Murray, Andrew: The Two Covenants. v1. 1 Sep 2012

Andrew Murray (1828–1917)

The second child of Andrew Murray Senior, a Dutch Reformed Church missionary sent from Scotland to South Africa, Andrew was born on 9 May 1828. His mother, Maria Susanna Stegmann, was of French Huguenot and German Lutheran descent.

Andrew was sent to Scotland for his education with his elder brother, John. They obtained their master's degrees in 1845 then went to the University of Utrecht to study theology. The two brothers became members of Het Reveil, a religious revival movement opposed to the rationalism which was in vogue at that time. After their ordination they returned to South Africa.

Andrew married Emma Rutherford on 2 July 1856, and they had eight children – four boys and four girls. He died on 18 January 1917 aged 88.

Andrew Murray was a noted missionary leader and is best known today for his devotional writings, which place great emphasis on the need for a rich, personal devotional life. He wrote over 240 books.

The Two Covenants

In this work Andrew Murray draws our attention to the superiority of the New Covenant over the Old. He shows how important it is for Christian's to walk in the full blessings of the New Covenant, and the strength and joy that this will bring. As always his teaching is pastoral and full of spiritual wisdom.
