Oh man, "Shards of Honor" is where we see why Cordelia and Aral both have the reputations they do. The book has, I think, some of the coolest military SF of the whole series, next to "Warrior's Apprentice." The romance element is there, but calling it a romance because of it would be like calling "Empire Strikes Back" a romance.
Now, if someone wants to call "A Civil Campaign" a romance...easier sell there. Last edited by ApK; 12-29-2013 at 07:18 PM. |

Anything by Weber, esp the Safehold, and Empire of Man series.
Flint's 1632 series. John C. Wright's Chaos series. Louise Cooper's Time's Master and Chaos Gate series. The first I was only able to get as an ebook from Fictionwise and the other not available as ebook at all. Demon of Undoing by Alton. Lilith's Brood by Butler. Deed of Paksenarrion by Moon. Enchantment Emporium and Wild Ways by Huff. Trickster's Choice and Trickster's Queen by Pierce. Mckillip's Riddlemaster series and Fool's Run. Neither as ebooks sadly but both great. |

Try some classic SF such as works by James H. Schmitz, Gordon R, Dickson, H. Beam Piper, Jerry Pournelle, etc. Many may be found for free here: http://www.freesfonline.de/RecommendedStories.html

You might like the Phule's Company books by Robert Asprin, and in the worst case, they are short so you won't lose much time if you decide they aren't for you :P
I bring them up because they are also about a motley space legion who follow and unlikely but charismatic leader. |

Another vote for Vatta's War. Excellent series. It and Vorkosigan are two of my favourite series, so since our tasts fit on Vorkosigan, they might on Vatta as well.

Fantasy rather than military science fiction but I liked bothe Bujold's Sharing Knife and Chalion series. Curse of Chalion may be my favourite fantasy book of all time. |

Shards is good, but Barrayar is great. Cordelia's best moments and I love the scene when she comes back from her "shopping" trip.
