WiFi Samsung Galaxy Tab has Older CPU, Slower GPU?

Perhaps as cost-saving measure, the WiFi-only Galaxy Tab is using a “1GHz A8 Cortex processor” according to the official product page”, while the 3G equipped version of the Galaxy Tab is using a “C110, 1GHz, Cortex A8 Hummingbird” processor.

Both devices are using 1GHz A8 CPUs, but the 3G equipped version of the Galaxy Tab uses the PowerVR SGX 540 GPU while the WiFi only version is using the previous generation.

Seems rather odd. Maybe Samsung sees the 3G Tab as more like an iPhone 4 (top line components), and the wifi version more like an iPod Touch (cheaper components)

With the new Tab's coming out, the 10.1 in June and the 8.9 sometime this year I wonder if the 7 is even going to continue in its current form. Perhaps with the WiFi they wanted to get something out immediately and couldn't get enough of the newer GPU's?

Good point-they may just consider the wifi 7 a short-term solution until the next gen shows up.

Yep I agree the WIFI only model is most likely targeted for the buget minded folks. Dropping the GPU is one way to reduce the cost without making it look like Samsung is removing features.... well aside from the lacking 3G.

I wonder if most users would even notice the difference.

Only for graphic intensive apps, but now that most games require a dual core the lack of graphics power will be masked by the lack of computing power.

IIRC 2.x Android doesn't really utilize the GPU properly does it?

Funny, that's the same GPU as the Nook color supposedly uses. And the CPU is pretty much the same as the NC (200mhz faster though).

So basically the Wi-Fi Tab is even closer to a Nook Color than the old one was. Not much of a difference between the two.

I think the real reason is manufacturing capacity with iphone, Ipad and their own galaxy devices they are unable to meet demand.

Well, Galaxy Tab is still lighter (don't think they altered the weight) and Froyo out of the box, no reason to root. To me, those two are a big difference, plus the two integrated cameras, which are better than iPad 2 by the way.

Agree ... but no full access to Android Market, not out of stock. So still you need to root it in order to release its full potential.

Weight is also a pro, for Galaxy Tab I mean. When holding a Nook Color and holding a Galaxy Tab you can tell that the difference is noticeable. Multiply that for several hours or minutes and the difference will increase much more.

Not everyone wants 3G I don't think we should say WiFi is for budget folks. I am 100% WiFi that's what I do in the real world is WiFi. 3G is slower and now with 4G and then 5G and etc.. The cost to run all these extras cost money the data plans limits they got for broadband over G's isn't that great. Where you can tap into WiFi Hot Spots at a lot of free WFHS now are appearing more than before.

that's why if anyone ever asks i tell them to get a used/refurb 3g tab at ~$300 instead of the new wifi. of course there are some downsides of buying used.
