I tend to reach a version of software that is "good enough" and stop upgrading to more bloated versions. I use a word processor from 13 years ago (Word 97), an image viewer from 10 years ago (ACDSee 2.44) an image editor from 13 years ago (PaintShop Pro 4.14) an FTP program from 14 years ago (CuteFTP 1.8), Adobe Acrobat (not the reader-- the full thing) from 9 years ago (v5). Use MediaPlayerClassic for video (with the look of Windows Media Player way back from Win95-- I also still use the desktop look of Windows95, and I'm XP, not Vista, but that's pretty mainstream there...)

Firefox, Vuescan, Aperture, Gimp, Evernote, Dropbox, iTunes...and that's about it (there'd be more, but they're not on my Dock, so they'd be "occasionals").

I assume we're not counting iPhone apps.

Cheers,
Marc

It's interesting to think about how streamlined my home computer use has gotten in the past few years. I've gone from a gaming desktop and hours of playing MMORPGs to a little netbook and a small crop of low-intensity applications:
- Firefox
- Songbird (for music)
- Thunderbird (for occasional usenet lurking; I just do email through the web)
- GIMP (image editing)
- OpenOffice (word processing/spreadsheets)
- XChat (IRC)
- Pidgin (instant messenger)

I think all of those except Songbird were installed by default on my OS (Linux Mint).

You won't be dissapointed. This word processor exports to ePub, has a very small footprint, and has old-worldy typing sounds (you can turn them off). And it's very cheap too.
