preparing scanned books before PDF-ing

I have a bunch of scanned books (two-page images) that need to be split into one page per image files and then joined into a PDF document. Does anyone know of a software that can do this efficiently (maybe automatically)? I've tried Scan Tailor, which looks very promising, but is not finished yet (I cannot save the result). Is there any other similar software?

Many sites in .ru zone mention ScanKromsator that seems to be a great program for tasks like this. The interface is in English, but all the help and guides seem to be Russian-only. You could try and see if you can find your way around it.
Here's a page with a short guide and a download link.
