Why Kindle format still can't handle books with maps, pictures (travel books)?
Exercise:

Download a free sample of a recent Lonely Planet published travel book. The Brazil edition is a good example, issued on December 1, 2013.

Then compare it with an EPUB from the Kobo Store, Sony, or B&N.

See any difference? Quality of pictures, file size.

Laziness on the part of the publisher. Amazon's KF8 format is at least as capable as ePub.

Part of the blame may lie with Amazon for charging by the MB (see here under Delivery Costs), though I don't know if those apply for non KDP books too.
