lol I usually keep my Windows computer about 5 years. I ran Win XP on a desktop for 7 years or more. I still have the desktop. I have upgraded the memory and hard drive. But I normally have all my computers specifically made how I want.

I think we're probably a bunch of outliers here on MR (just look at how many of us hoard ancient e-reading devices in our profiles, myself included).
My first Mac PowerBook lasted for 8 years until the power supply adapter died (I think) and I was happily using it right up until the end. One of these days I should go to that place which offers low-cost generic replacements and give that a try. |

Glorfindel has some ancient Windows 95 monster which has amongst other notable qualities, 32MB of RAM. I believe it runs DSL (Damn Small Linux) now...
You can probably get that Mac up and running pretty cheaply, I would definitely give that a try. My laptop was unusable on 256MB of RAM, I got a $20 upgrade to 2GB and that together with a new power supply for about $7 got it running perfectly well. Meanwhile, people buy new computers all the time for upwards of $300 just so they can use the internet... |
