I’ve always wondered how such an ethical man could produce such a badly-hehaved son (—Commodus — see either ‘Gladiator’, or Gibbon’s ‘Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire’).

R Wood has already posted a serviceable translation in Vol II of the Harvard Classic series. However, I have used Long’s for the last 25 years and grown fond of it. Since we already have several versions of Homer, I thought that it would be permissible to post this. I have omitted most of the unnecessary footnotes.

I haven’t the faintest idea which of the emperor’s names should properly be the surname on this forum. I’m going with Antoninus because this was his imperial name.
