Exclamation Booken (Cybook Gen3) do not complying with warranty

If you plan to buy one of the BOOKEN ebook readers be careful!
They do not complying with warranty.

After few months of use of Booken Cybook Gen 3 (Gold) the screen remained blocked and it was not possible more to use.

Asking to Booken for the reparation in warranty, they say that screen damage is not covered. Even demonstrating that it was due to an intrinsic defect and not to damage caused for example by a fall or an impacted by sharp object as keys, screwdriver, etc (the ebook reader was on the table in a safe place and I simply open again after some days) they will no comply with warranty and asked for the reparation a cost which makes more convenient to buy a new (different) ebook reader.

Note that the warranty do not indicates that screen is not covered by warranty.

Therefore, if you plan to buy one of the BOOKEN ebook readers be extremely carefull. They do not comply with warranty and will charge yo you the cost of reparation.

Screen breakage is not under warrenty. That's true for bookeen, amazon, sony, pocketbook, any manufacturer.
And avoid breaking your cellphone's screen, it's not under warranty either.

An other point, maybe you did hit you cybook. I don't remember how the hell mine got it,though marks on the case are proof it was seriously hit. E-ink screen uses a glass substrate, that make them prone to breakage. Glass is also know to sometime react to being hit afterwards.

No manufacturer will replace a broken screen substrate under warranty. Screen substrates break because of a physical impact - ie damage caused by you. Warranty repairs are for faults that occur in manufacturing.

Hello Merlin,
Not sure where you live, but I suggest you examine what your rights are under the Common Law of that land, which will over-ride any company warranty or guarantee. Here in the UK the retailer is responsible for things going wrong, if, of course the fault is due to a defect in manufacturing.
How long have you had it?
Are you aware of a jolt which would have caused the screen substrate to break?
Regards
John

Hello HarryT

clearly no manufacturer will replace a broken screen substrate under warranty, if screen substrates break because of a physical impact.

BUT the screen was NOT broken by a physical impact, because was just on the table and with its hard cover protection. I demonstrated to them that there is no sign at all which indicate a physical impact, but still they refuse the reparation.

For the reparation, it is necessary to send in France, with also the additional cost of international mail, and thus it is more convenient to buy a new apparatus that repair, if the cost of screen should be charged. On the other hand, they know that make an international legal opposition (because technical assistance is made only at the company headquarter in France) is to complex and at the end more costly that buy a new one.

So the conclusion is simply. Advice all peoples that have in mind to buy an ebook reader from Booken Cybook (Gen, Opus, Orizon) that they have very fragile products which easy broken and that they refuse to guarantee warranty.

We've been round this loop before with eReaders from various companies on this forum, Merlin, which is why you're encountering a certain amount of sceptism. When photos have been posted of the issue they tend to show evidence of an impact site or flexing.

That's not to say that your device hasn't suffered a different problem, but if it was left on a table is it possible that someone else knocked it off, or put something on it accidentally?

What Graham said. And, since all companies do this, I really don't see a reason to bash Bookeen.

I'm afraid you'll find that exactly the same is true no matter what type of reader you buy. Physical screen breakage is not covered by warranty. Bookeen are no different from any other manufacturer in this regard.

Then maybe it was some torsion, or an earlier impact. As a said, glass sometimes react afterwards.

However, e-book manufacturer should make a clear warning about the screen fragility. Broke mine once, then I've learned to treat my e-reader with more respect, and no problem.

Of course it is covered by law or by warranty of it is a manufacturing defect. You just have a problem of showing it if the seller does not admit to the defect.

Merlin, you say the screen is 'blocked' does this mean broken, or not functioning.

Any item that has a glass or thin plastic screen will be fragile and users should take it as granted that they may shatter it, I don't really think manufacturers have to go out of their way to state what is plainly obvious.
