Too many letters. We Yanks have short attention spans and need our words to be a short as possible. Some of us are even considering eliminating the second "o". 😀

Sorry, but because you cannot properly spell color, none of your colourful nominations count. You'll have to move to the US to have your nominations count.

I remember searching the Ottawa library catalogue a few years ago when I wanted to read Victoria Finlay's "Colour: A Natural History of the Palette". I could never get a search hit on it , because of course the library owned only American edition copies. I couldn't find it in the catalogue until I did a search by author name

I had the same problem when I did a search online with my local library to check that they had The Color Purple, but of course automatically typed it with the U inserted. They didn't have that version, but do have it with the US spelling!

Australia's a lot like that. "Sure, sure, mate. If that's how you want it, no worries."

Anything to avoid an argument, which is how we've ended up with bits and pieces from everywhere.

I'll nominate Green Rider by Kristen Britan.

Quote:
On her long journey home from school after a fight that will surely lead to her expulsion, Karigan G'ladheon ponders her uncertain future. As she trudges through the immense Green Cloak forest, her thoughts are interrupted by the clattering of hooves, as a galloping horse bursts from the woods.

The rider is slumped over his mount's neck, impaled by two black-shafted arrows. As the young man lies dying on the road, he tells Karigan he is a Green Rider, one of the legendary messengers of the king of Sacoridia.

Before he dies, he begs Karigan to deliver the “life and death” message he bears to King Zachary. When she reluctantly he agrees, he makes her swear on his sword to complete his mission, whispering with his dying breath, "Beware the shadow man...".

Taking on the golden-winged horse brooch that is the symbol of the Green Riders, Karigan is swept into a world of deadly danger and complex magic, her life forever changed. Compelled by forces she cannot understand, Karigan is accompanied by the silent specter of the fallen messenger and hounded by dark beings bent on seeing that the message, and its reluctant carrier, never reach their destination.

Jon, we still have a six months rule and this was fully nominated in December. For the purposes of the club, the rules apply to nominations and selections from the other clubs.

Here we go with a rather interesting nomination. I'm nominating The Innocence of Father Brown by G. K. Chesterton.

Quote:
With his round face, pipe and umbrella, the shambling, bespectacled priest Father Brown is an unlikely detective - yet his innocent air hides a razor-sharp understanding of the criminal mind. As this first volume of his adventures shows, the wise, worldly clerical sleuth has an uncanny ability to bring even the most elusive wrongdoer to justice.
A FREE omnibus including this story can be found right here in the Patricia Clark Library.

This can easily be converted to KF8 or Mobi for use with a Kindle.

I will third. If my mom which is 99 cents doesn't win, I'd love a freebie! I haven't read Brown in years, and Chesterton was a miserable mysoginist, but I do enjoy a vintage mystery.l
