Newbie question about Kindle & Calibre

I would like to download the books I've purchased from Amazon into Calibre and edit the metadata -- using Calibre to manage my growing library. I have ebooks from various sources, but the majority come from Amazon.

But then, what happens if I get a new Kindle? I can't just copy the files from Calibre to the new Kindle because they wouldn't work. I'd have to redownload them from Amazon.

So does that mean all of my work editing the metadata would have been for nothing? Or could I somehow merge the metadata from the "old" files into the new files?

Thanks! I hope I asked that question clearly.

You could download the new file from Amazon, and then add that file to your calibre library entry (effectively overwriting the old azw format file). Then do a send to device (or however you normally get the fixed files onto the Kindle) and the old/fixed metadata would get written to the new file on the Kindle.

Clear as mud, right?

just click the edit meta information button. In the topright corner of the resulting dialog is an area where you can add/remove individual files to a book entry.
