Does this mean that it wouldn't be a good idea to learn from http://w3schools.com/ because it doesn't teach EPUB2 or CSS2?

IMHO it is a great idea (it is where I picked up my CSS and modern HTML).

Just remember not all HTML and CSS is supported by EPUB2. The Basics are the same. IIRC MR wiki has a chart on the limits of EPUB
