What are some alternatives to the upcoming 9.7" Onyx Boox Note S?

In your opinion, is 9.7" comfortable enough for PDFs?

Depends. It has the same screen size and resolution as my Kindle DX, not good enough for most of my PDFs. I prefer read on Kobo Aura One in landscape mode. However some PDF looks quite fine on Kindle DX. So it depends on your files. As for me resolution should be higher for comfort reading. Screen size is ok.

Not with the resolution of the Boox Note S. I do read PDFs on an iPad when I must but it has higher resolution (1536x2048 compared to Boox Note S's 825x1200) and more computing power when I need to zoom in on a portion of the page.

Pixel density is a very important parameter in addition to screen size. The screen you mention is 150 ppi. In my experience, above 200 ppi is required for tolerable reading.
