It is only a production error that shipped them on some Kindles.

This feels backwards though. It seems like this would allow downgrading from the factory package. But the first step in the current jailbreak is to downgrade from a customer release back to the factory package. Guess I don't understand how all that works.

There are two components involved in the "downgrade attack" prevention.

The checker and the checkee.

The checkee (the factory_*.bin) does not satisfy the checker's (the running consumer_*.bin) requirements to be blocked.

I.E: It is not the firmware version that is doing the checking, it is the firmware package that is being checked that does not satisfy the test required for being blocked.

Yeah, lab126 probably got it backwards also, which is most likely the reason they left the factory_*.bin packages on the file system.

You can expect them to fix that someday, RSN.
