Lightbulb Free (iTunes) Performing Arts in Canada: A Celebration [Culture History Multilingual]

So, it's Leonard Cohen's 80th birthday today (as of the 21st, that is, which it still is for a short while longer in Pacific Time), and to celebrate I thought I'd post a really nifty related freebie which has been waiting for an available slot.

The Performing Arts in Canada: A Celebration aka Les arts du spectacle au Canada : une célébration is a bilingual commemorative multimedia e-book presentation of The Governor General's Performing Arts Awards, free courtesy of The Walrus Foundation (one of our more prominent culture & journalism-supporting non-profits) & The National Film Board of Canada, who've collaborated to make this available.

Much like the similar Toronto International Film Festival A Century of Chinese Cinema freebie, this contains some very informative introductory write-ups on major Canadian cultural figures in the 6 performing arts covered (broadcasting, theatre, dance, classical music, popular music, & film) as well as selected philanthropical cultural donors, and videos of the awards acceptance speeches and follow-up interviews of many of the recipients at the actual GGA ceremonies, and also selected additional short films and documentaries showcasing their works, which were provided by the National Film Board.

(Actually, the NFB bonus stuff is "interactive", meaning not included in the actual e-book and requires an internet connection to load, but you can save your 3G bandwidth by hitting up the NFB website for them directly in Canada, or their official YouTube channel for viewers worldwide).

Leonard Cohen's only got a write-up in this (his GG Lifetime Achievement Award was given to him 21 years ago, and the NFB only started filming these things in 2008, according to Wikipedia), but you'll be able to watch the speeches for other notable Canadian talents such as Deepa Mehta (one of my favourite film directors, who also has an interesting follow-up interview) and William Shatner (if I have to explain to you who this is, I'm sorry that you've lived such an obviously deprived life ).

Some of these people will probably be well-known worldwide, while others will be fairly obscure even within Canada, but overall this book is a very good introduction to some of the most important and influential personages in Canadian arts culture over the past few decades and if you've any interest in Canadian history or performing arts (or even just in some of your possible favourite Canadian rock musicians such as Joni Mitchell, Rush [acceptance speech included], Robbie Robertson & The Band, Bryan Adams, et al.) I highly recommend checking this out.

All text is in both English and French, but unfortunately, only a few of the videos are subtitled, and many of the speeches are bilingual, so you'll need a pretty good grasp of both spoken languages to understand them all.

NB: This is a "Made for iBooks" e-book and will require a sufficiently advanced iDevice or Mac with the appropriate software to view; please see the product page for specific requirement details.

This is also a very large, nearly 2GB file, so you'll likely want to download via computer/sideload it to your iDevice if that's what you'll be using to view it.

Generously made free on a permanent basis @ iTunes (available to Canadians, and several other countries I spot-checked, such as Denmark, New Zealand, and the Netherlands, but not worldwide, as it doesn't exist in Iceland or China, unfortunately).

I looked around on the Walrus Foundation's website, but while they have a brief blurb for this, they don't provide a direct download for people outside the covered countries, nor do they have an accompanying online exhibition which lets you see a chunk of the materials via the web the way TIFF did for their David Cronenberg e-book.

But they do openly say in the intro that many of the videos will be viewable on the National Film Board's official site.

And this has been the selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day.

Because education and entertainment and education about entertainment, itself provided in an entertaining and educational fashion, are all very important and a good* use of one's taxpayer dollars of which I approve.

Enjoy!

* Well, at any rate, a much better one than Stephen Harper's growing and increasingly expensive needless security entourage [you'll notice that no one's yet cared enough to try to break into 24 Sussex Drive while he's resident, leaving his considerably more awesome wife to fend off intruders with statuettes, much less tried to face-pie him and receive a Shawinigan handshake in return] and his whatever Action Plan ads praising his whateverness.
