Color kindle imminent?
Wondering if anyone else has noticed on amazon.com that otherwise normal looking kindles have splashes of color on the book covers? I noticed this recently in the banner display for a Stephen King book and I don’t think it’s accidental. I don’t think it looks like an LCD screen photoshopped onto an ereader, it looks like a color e-ink screen.

I’d be amazed if amazon did this, given their reluctance to innovate over the past years, and yet....

I also doubt it given Amazon's reluctance to innovate and color eInk screens being kinda crappy.

Yes, a couple of weeks ago there was a Kindle-like device in one of the banners, but it wasn’t any of the existing ones. People designing these are not going to have disclosure on new devices ‘until it is time’. So these are just made up.

That doesn’t mean Amazon isn’t about to release a color Kindle.

As for color eInk being crap, we have not yet seen a device with the latest iteration on Kaleido screen. Maybe it is ‘good enough’ for Amazon to offer such a device.

Has there been a Kaleido update since the Pocketbook Inkpad Color?

If not, I played with one extensively a few months ago, and I think a kindle with a Kaleido screen would get a lot of bad reviews and returns on amazon.com with a lot of negative messages on mobileread. I didn't return mine, but it is questionable whether I'll do much, if any, reading on it.

It still will not be good enough color for Amazon. They do sell the Fire range for colour and their app (iOS & Android) is colour.

Inherently saturated colour using R G B on a passive opaque display needs a massively strong front light or direct sunlight. Even then you only have about 4000 shades/hues compared to 200,000 to 16,000,000 on LCD, OLED, AMLED etc.
